dual boot linux & vista on Li 1718

Postby roadrash » Mon Sep 03, 2007 5:36 pm

I have just bought a Amilo Li 1718 Laptop & want to put linux on it as a dual boot system with Vista that is currently on it.
I have a few questions to ask before i commit to doing it.

I read somewhere that you must only use the disk management shrink tool in vista to resize the partitions with vista on them, to create space for new ones for the install. is this true?

Also, is it safe to let whatever i linux I use install the grub boot loader into the hard disks MBR.

I haven't decided which distro I will be putting on but it will be either Linux Mint, Simply Mepis, Ubuntu or PCLOS.
I use Mepis on my desktop PC but might be moving to using Linux Mint so I would be happier with either mepis or Mint possibly.
Can someone help me with these questions?

Hi,

I've had to keep Vista on for the time being and I simply shrank the vista partition and did a default install of Ubuntu Feisty into the created space letting it install grub. All worked fine - well, still trying to get keys and wireless working :D

Cheers

Andy

I have tried the mepis, mint & PCLOS linuxes as live cd's and they work fine except for there is no wireless network or sound. I have read on here that others have had problems with this.
Has this problem been solved or is it still ongoing?
