Can't Install XP (Any version!) on LI1818  Topic is solved

Postby lj_matt » Thu Sep 06, 2007 10:11 am

Hi all, first post
I've just got a new Li 1818, 2g ram, 160gb hd core 2 duo 1.73 laptop that came with vista, however I'd prefer to load XP pro.
I have various versions of xp (home, pro, corp etc!) and the manufacturer claims it's compatible with xp home & media centre.
After lots of fun loading the hard drive drivers and slipstreaming sp2 into my discs etc I can get windows to load the installation screen, format the drive and copy files but then at 100% I get a blue screen of death with setupdd.sys listed.
I've run memtest86 v3.3 and the ram is 100% fine.
This error seems to point towards either faulty hardware (ram etc) OR incompatible with xp hardware.
Has anyone else come across this fault, and if so any ideas how to get over it?
I was willing to purchase a new copy of xp pro but only if I can get the damn thing to load!!!
Any help appreciated!
Matt

I know that there are Li 1718 laptops with XP installed.
I think it's a problem with your CD, try to search for problems with this "setupdd.sys".

I wondered if it's the cd but I've tried 3 seperate versions!!!
Might be able to get hold of a commercial xp cd from work to try.
all the search options I find point to ram problems but as memtest came back fine after 2 hours of testing I find that hard to believe.
Have tried removing the one stick of memory that is accessed via the removeable panel but cannot see where the second (presumably primary) one is located.
Could be a pain to try again now as I've spent hours loading software and updates too......
One other thought - could the "hidden recovey" partition have anything to do with it?
My recovery disc for vista looks like a proper install disc except I didn't need to enter the code from the sticker - I guess if I completely wiped the hd and started again I'd still be able to use the recovery install if required???

Did you integrate your SATA drivers three times and burn each CD?

2 hours is not enough, even with 10 hours you can't be 100% sure.

That's also possible.

I think so, but I'm not sure (have no laptop with Vista preinstalled).

Yep! :)
It's really bugging me now - I might be tempted to completely remove all partitions and try again.
Another problem is originally I tried using the original unmodified disc with the drivers on a usb key which worked untill after formatting when it asked for the drivers again. May have to purchase a usb floppy drive to try instead.

I tried again last night, completely removed all partitions (including the hidden restore one) but it still crashes as the same point.
Interestingly enough the restore installation went back in fine without me having to enter the product key and it's fully activated and running again!
Think I'll have to get onto fsc and see what they say - I always have the option of getting ebuyer to rma it and try another unit if I get no joy from fsc.

I installed XP pro to Li 1818 with same kind of problem first time (with SP2 and SATA drivers included in XP). Removed all partitions and formatted again and after that it worked. Another was cd-rw disk, it was not working correctly, cd-r did it fine.

Well I've now tried it with 4 different windows xp version discs, all sp2, all with sata drivers installed and it gives the same error each time.
i tried removing each stick of ram in turn and re-installing but it gives the same error so I think it's either the ram is incompatible or the hard drive is.
Maybe one day I'll get a new sata drive and try again, for now I'm resigned to being stuck with the P.O.S that is vista :(

Update: I've now tried removing the 2 ram modules and installing a single new 512meg stick purchased for testing purposes.
The error still happens the same.
Have also tried windows 2000 with sp4 and the drivers and get the same message about setupdd.sys & also ntoskrnl.exe.
The stop fault listed this time is "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" which again points to memory from the searches I've done :?: :!:
I'm waiting for an answer from the supplier on whether they will rma it for me and replace - hopefully if they do I'll get a replacement that will work!

Ok Final Update - I've cracked it! :D
Would you believe it was the discs created using iso builder???!!!!
I tried installing a virtual machine with ms virtual pc 2007 and it crashed the same so I tried one of my trusty old corp cd's and it went in ok.
I downloaded nlite and redid the xp pro sp1 disc I had (from an original cd) to sp2 and included the sata drivers and it's currently installing.
Pity I had to spend £25 on some new ram to discover it was a bad cd but there you go.
I'll post back when I've got it all working to my satisfaction but it looks like it just didn't like the winiso builder created discs

hey,

i have an amilo li 1818 and i cannot install xp pro sp2 on it. i used nlite (1.4.5) to integrate the sata driver (iaahci.inf...), but it still says it cannot find hard drives to use. could you please give me a zip with the files you used?

and any additional steps you took besides integrating the driver into the xp files and generating the iso...

thanks in advance!

ok i solved it

i took the sys file i extracted (there was already a pirate xp installed on that machine) with driverbackup!, and edited I386/TXTSETUP.SIF according to the tutorial i found. i had to use iastor.sys and iaahci.inf, i think this confused nlite and that's why it didn't work (there's iastor.inf too, but it is needed after installation only).

so all you need to do:

1. fire up nlite, point it to the xp installer files, and then to the destination folder
2. after it finished copying, select to integrate drivers and to build iso
3. when it asks for drivers, choose to integrate directory. download sata.zip (attached to my post), extract it, and select the resulting folder in nlite
4. right before you select where to save the iso, edit I386/TXTSETUP.SIF so it look like:

Code: Select all
...
[SourceDisksFiles]
iastor.sys   = 1,,,,,,_x,4,1
...
[HardwareIdsDatabase]
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2652&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2653&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C1&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C5&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2652&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C1&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
...
[SCSI.Load]
iastor = iastor.sys,4
...
[SCSI]
iastor  = "Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH)"
...

i pasted the leading lines (for you to know where to put them) but obviously you only have to copy & paste the iastor lines.

5. copy IASTOR.SYS (i attached mine with this post) to I386
6. generate the iso

that's all. if it works for your this way, you may also try to use the other nlite features (such as integrating sp3 etc), but i think it's a wise idea to get the basic functionality first. i had to play around with it a lot, one certain version works with the installer but doesn't on first boot, so... good luck!

-----------

note1: if it still won't work for you, extract or get the sys needed for your system from somewhere, and copy the device id's (the PCI\VEN... stuff) from the inf file into TXTSETUP.SIF. you can safely put it after the 6 entries i listed here

note2: if you get a bsod during install, there will be a problem with iastor.sys in I386. if it hangs on first boot, the problem must be with the drivers integrated into the iso (they are in I386/NLDRV). of course, YMMV ...

note3: i dissuade you from integrating sp3 into your iso, there are problems with activation, so it seems i have to redone the installation with an sp2 iso

Viktor you are an absolute genius.
Thank you so much for this help.

I have been trying for 9 hours with lots of different slipstreaming methods, none of them worked.

But yours is spot on.!

Thank you soooo much.

Merry Christmas and I wish you all the best of luck in the New Year.

You should be knighted.!

Anton.

Does anyone know if these steps will be similar for Windows 7?
