Amilo Li1705 - No sound from headphone-jack

Postby uhbuntuh » Thu Sep 13, 2007 2:01 pm

Hi! I'm running Kubuntu 7.04 on my Amilo Li1705 but I can't get the headphone-jack working. I get sound from the internal speakers and the mic-jack is working as well, but when I plug my headphones into the headphone-jack the speakers fall silent (as they should do) and my headphones receive NO signal.

I tried alsa-1.0.14 and alsa-1.0.15rc2.

I tried to add different options to /etc/modprobe.d/sound
Code: Select all
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel model=fujitsu
options snd-hda-intel model=F17342

"F17342" is for 2-jack (my amilo has 2 jacks, mic and headphones)

I'd be great if anybody could help me!
Who has got the headphone-jack working on his Amilo Li1705?
Thank you!

Sounds to me more like a hardware problem with either your headphones or the jack plug/socket. Software doesn't control whether the sound is routed by the internal speaker or headphones.

i think the routing is ok. there is simply no signal on the headphone-jack.
and i tried different headphones... ;)

the bug has been already reported:

I have the same problem by running SuSE Linux 10.2. This is NOT a hardware error because everything is ok under Windows (all editions) but under linux neither I can get the jack work.

I also have another problem: the internal speaker is very quiet. I set the volume to maximum with KMix (KDE sound control) and I harldy can hear the sounds... I tried to boot a Live CD WINDOWS and the speakers worked perfectly. I did this to make myself sure there's no hardware error...

I'm new to Linux... please help me...

I don't know if this applies to the 1705 but on my 1718 i also had to increase the volume to maximum with the laptops Function keys on the keyboard. If the 1705 has these they are a set of keys with blue sysbols on them. The main Funtion operation key is located next to the left CTRL key and has a blue box symbol on it with the letters "FN" in it and then the volume up/down keys are the F5 and F6 keys along the top of the keyboard. The volume is adjusted by holding down the funtion operation (FN) key while adjusting volume upor down with F5 or F6. Other keys like F1, F3, F4, F7 & F8 also have other funtions marked on them with blue symbols.

I just tried this solution that you offered... The volume from the speaker is still very low...
It's the same... I can hear some sound from the speaker but it's like when I put my iPod far from me and her some sound from it... from the eraphones :S...
Anyway.. Thank you. and anyone who wants help me :)
I keep searching for some solution and if I succeed, I'll immediately inform all of you!!

just another question: from where can I download alsa 1.0.15? the ftp that amarok offers to download the mp3 plugin only contains alsa 1.0.14

VT8237 VIA sound chip

Postby dphoenixx » Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:49 pm

I've found something in Yast2 that might solve my problem... I think.

Yast2 reports that it recognized my sound chip as VIA High Definition Audio.
By trying to add other drivers I've found the exact name of my sound chip.
Amilo Li 1705 has a VIA VT8237 sound chip and there is in the list when I try to add other cards. but when I try to delete the previous (Via high definition audio driver) Yast2 only disables it and doesn't delete it from the list. when I try to enable the new (VT8237) driver an error message appears that some modules maybe defined wrongly. so I cannot enable the new driver. do you know any solution for this? (note that I'm using openSUSE 10.2)

For Amilo Li1705 users:

Those who had sound from the speaker, but the volume was very low (even if the mixer was on 100%) do the following:

first download the alsa 1.0.15 source from the alsa website.
as a root follow the installing instructions (note that you'll have the whole Linux source code installed to your system)

after finishing the installation reboot, then install an alsa-mixer (like KAmix) to enable maximum conpatibility (SuSE users from version 10.2 or above already have this mixer named Kmix).

now got to your audio or video player and select ALSA as Sound subsystem. the option "AUTOMATIC" is NOT working!!!

okay... now only one problem... the jack... there are some switchers and sliders appears in KMix (or KAmix, or what you installed), but I tried to enable these and didn't work...

anyway what JACK is used for (see in amarok-options-sound_subsystem-output_module - JACK... I tried to enable it but the jack output didn't work and there was no sound from the speakers either...

Anyone made any progress yet? Same laptop, same problem - Ubuntu 7.10

Tried to compile alsa (1.0.15, 1.0.16rc1), read somewhere to alter the code (patch_via.c) - no effect...

same problem with headphone jacks

Postby rozakia » Sun Feb 10, 2008 5:29 pm

my sound works perfectly. except the headphone jacks. i have opensuse10.3 . it is needed anotherdriver maybe via 8237a. but there is no such driver in the opensuse 10.3. im too newbie to find it on the internet myself, and install it. maybe in the next versions of opensuse orubuntu there will be other drivers, making the amilo li 1705 work.

Anybody out there with another distro (e.g. anything else than Ubuntu or Suse) any luck?

Why dont you try downloading something like mepis or PCLOS. They can be tested without installing them. They are both good at recognising harware such as sound.

Sound works on my notebook. Alsa 1.0.16. Ubuntu 7.10.
Look what to do: amilola1703.uprize.no
On official Alsa site www.alsa-project.org
open terminal and do: sudo alsaconf
Maybe you will need to install other binary packages from alsa site to use alsaconf.
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "I can't configure Slackware".

@Wuffur:
The sound *does* work, only not when using the headphones. Can you confirm that you have the sound working through the headphones?
