Headphone sound with Fedora 9 on Xi amilo 2550

Postby kevin tough » Sat May 17, 2008 9:36 pm

With my new install of Fedora 9 the headphone jack works but does not shut down the notebooks speakers. There is a slider control In the "Volume Control: HDA Intel (alsa mixer) but it has no effect. The front slider control controls both the main speakers and headphone output.

I"ve heard that Fujitsu Siemens sells in some corners of the world notebooks pre-installed with Linux. Has anyone else heard of this?

When I figure the sound out or someone offers a solution I will post it back to the forum.

Sincerely,

Kevin Tough

Knoppix is the distribution.

Also in gOS and Slax there are problems with the heaphone jack.
gOS (with Enligtenment) is a good distribution for Via chipset: automaticaly recognized.

@ Kevin Tough

So you do have sound through the headphones? I'm not familiar with your distribution; does it use ALSA and if so what version?

gOS and Slax uses Alsa too, but the headphones are unresponsive again.
I want to give a try to Knoppix . I'm very curious if this distribution recognize the hadphones because it is used as Linux OS for some Fujitsu Siemens notebooks, like our Amilo Li 1705.

For me, in Fedora 9, it was easy to correct the screen resolution (in Gnome) but the headphones are dead too.

L.E.: I've tried Knoppix 5.3.1. Well, is a good distribution for rescue data (Live CD) but it has problems with the sound. It doesn't recognize the sound board. It is complicate in Knoppix(installed on hard disk) to compile the correct driver for sound. Also, it recognizes the graphic chipset but the resolution is wrong.

I can't get the headphone jack to working, even on newest (today!) openSUSE 11.0. And I need headphones for Skype.

Did anyone try USB headset or headphones? Will USB work?

That should work - because USB devices integrate a simple soundcard, Linux will recognize this as usbaudio. But I'd recommend to make sure before buying a headset, that it'll work under Linux (with this usb audio driver) ;-)

Well it seems that some curious boys have find the solution of this problem. Here is their solution, a little complex for a linux amateur but it works. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/33508

I've tried too but it doesn't work for me. Maybe because of my long period without using a linux OS. Please, if someone here solved the problem with the solutions from the link, post a complete tutorial for n00bs here. I beg you!

P.S. I'm sorry for my bad english :(

Pimpdaz, thank you, but here is the linux section. I does not encountered any problem whit the drivers in Windows (Vista or XP)
There are news that announce a Ubuntu Ibex with a new kernel. Some guys already collaborates with the developers to fix this bug out of box. The wireless also.
No signs from Openchrome or Via for a stable 3D graphic driver.

Let's hope that the Amilo Li 1705 users will enjoy a complete compatible Linux distribution soon. :D

L.E. I've just installed Mandriva 2009 RC1. It recognizes the graphic chipset (without 3d acceleration), but the sound problem persists. :(
Now, I'll try these days the final release from Mandriva. We'll see but I'm not too optimist.
L.E.2: Mandriva 2009, final version, fails to recognise the video card.
L.E. 3: I've installed Fedora 10 RC too. The same problem. Ubuntu 8.10 fails to recognize the graphic chipset...a "great" headache, damn! :|
By the way, the wireless works like a charm on Fedora 10 with my Li1705. I can't say the same thing about Ubuntu Ibex.

It... it... it actually works?!

Recently I thought I'd give it another try... downloaded ALSA 1.0.19 and applied the patch to: patch_via.c (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=556217).
Compiled and installed it... and it ACTUALLY WORKS!

Am I the last one to figure this out or did everone else give up?

EDIT:
No sound (quality) issues either!

yea, the issues come from other modifications on ubuntu 8.10 after installing alsa, mentioned on launchpad. so, to me, alsa with patch works fine.
