Upgrade a li1705 Celeron M520 (64bits) to core 2 duo

Postby cdq » Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:50 pm

Hello everybody,

as i discovered my li1705 was using a 64bits processor (Celeron M520 wich works well with a 64bits linux distro), i searched information about that processor an discovered it seemed to come from a the core 2 duo family, excepted the second core not available.

My question:

as it's possible to replace a celeron-M 4xx with a pentium-M (with same fsb),
is it possible to replace the celeron-M M520 with a core 2 duo (with same fsb) ?
is-it the same socket ?
will the bios be compliant ?

would be great for HD movies...

Thanks.

Celeron M 520 has 533 MHz FSB, but afaik there's no Core 2 Duo with 533 MHz FSB.
According to the datasheet (http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/Resource ... 854147.pdf), a Core Duo works.

Thank you,

but the pdf seems to be out of date (mentionned the celeron M440 and they are now (2 monthes ago) shipped with a 64 bits M520

as mentionned on http://processorfinder.intel.com

it seems there are 2 core 2 duo 64bits with a 533fsb

SL9WE 1.73 GHz T5300 N/A 533 MHz 65 nm L2 2 MB Micro-FCPGA
SL9VP 1.60 GHz T5200 N/A 533 MHz 65 nm B2 2 MB Micro-FCPGA

2 mobile dual -core using this fsb toowithout 64bits mode (those mentionned in the fujitsu PDF)
SL9VY 1.73 GHz T2080 N/A 533 MHz 65 nm D0 1 MB Micro-FCPGA
SL9VX 1.60 GHz T2060 N/A 533 MHz 65 nm D0 1 MB Micro-FCPGA

and the celeron 64 bits are:
SL9VA 1.73 GHz 530 N/A 533 MHz 65 nm B2 1 MB Micro-FCPGA
SL9WN 1.60 GHz 520 N/A 533 MHz 65 nm A1 1 MB Micro-FCPGA

so, i was hoping whether a T5200 (SL9VP) or T5300 instead of my M520 (SL9WN)... don't know what a dual core mobile will give...

nobody try this for upgrading it's li1705...?
- a dual core mobile T2060 or T2080
- a core 2 duo T5200 or T5300

thanks.

Finally i bought on eBay a core duo t2350 socket M last week for a good price, and will try it tomorrow.

Will let you know whether it works well, and whether i got a 64bits Celeron M520 (core Merom) to sell...or a t2350 to (re)sale

After a more accurate test, everything works fine.
Got the power management working (processor frequency) and got a geekbench score from 1200 (M520) to around 2000 (T2350)
Great.

Ho , what problem did you have and how did you resolve it ? I want to upgrade my amilo li 1705 to T2060 but windows doesn't boot properly ( it boots up to a black screen with a cursor which moves very very slow ).

I succesfully replaced my M440 with a T5200. I've got a dual boot with XP en Windows 7. In can now play HD video without frame drops. CPU performance under Windows 7 went from 3,8 to 4,4.
