Upgrade M3438G Video Card 6800go to 7800go from eBay

Display problems, black screen, TV-Out,...

Postby Slavabour » Tue Jun 13, 2006 2:02 pm

So, You mean, that it is completely impossible to upgrade AMILO 3438 from 6800 to 7800? Correct?

Any news from 7600 owner? Does it work?

Got some information.

Contacted a source on this.Quanta has modified their cards in such a way that they have become unuasble for other books. He quoted 'video bios modifications' but I'm not sure what to make of it. He also reaffirmed that other cards can freely be exchanged (as Pikas just prooved) between any combination of Uniwill and Arima gear.

So, it would seeml the 7800 Gateway card is doomed.

The only way out I can see is to try to boot on integrated graphics and to try flashing the 7800's vBios.

Hi there,

Yes and no. It does boot, windows starting up and all, but there's no image on screen.

So, indeed there seems to be a vBios protection by Quanta/Gateway and on top of that a potential power budget problem.

I wanted to try to flash the 7600 vBios but couldn't find an appropriate one :(

It seems 100% a VBios problem.

But if u can dump that Vbios, and system boot up, thereis a chance to solve it.

I hopewill work for that 7600.

About 7800Go i'm going to dump Vbios and modify it.

But our problem is to re-flash it , because system can not boot up.

Well i'm searching for a Nootebook model compliant MxMIII that can boot up this 7800Go, in order to flash it.

How are you going to dump the vBios if the system doesn't boot?

My tester is returning the 7800 and 7600 and I am refunding him. I couldn't ask him to test much longer, as this would have raised the suspicion that I was leading him on.

So, there isn't much I can do right now.

I'm in contact with an owner of a Gateway NX860XL(with our 7800Go).

I have kindly requested to him his 7800Go VBios.

From Gateway we have also avaiable a MB Bios if necessary.

I'm still waiting for him.
We need patience.

Also: I'm going to pick up a 3438 myself today. Just found a 7600 bios that could be of MXM origin.

So, more testing in the near future ;)

Isn't it the prob, that the 1800 is the only other video card, that does work in the m3438(better:we know that it does).
We tried one of the 7800 cards from dell, but it didn't worl.
Who wants to spend the money for a new video card, that will perhaps not work?

Been reading the thread for some time, and just wanted to congratulate Ice-Tea for his honesty as a seller.

And regarding the 7800 and 7600 situation: I don't think it would be a big loss if they would never get to work on the M3438G, as neither version of them passes the X1800 on performance. At this time, I believe that only the Go 7900 GS and the Go 7900 GTX beat the X1800, but even this is not proven, as I haven't found yet benchmarkings for those two.

At this time I'm very happy with my Go 6800, does it's job very well. Maybe in 1 or 2 years I'll consider changing to the X1800.

Keep us posted guys!
