V2030 Fan Buzzing and CPU question

Postby my_fsc_v2030 » Sat Oct 06, 2007 7:28 pm

Hello,

My v2030 fan started to make a buzzing noise a couple of weeks ago, but I blew in the vent and it stopped. Last night, it started again, and blowing doesn't solve it. However, if I tip the laptop backwards, it stops, but starts when I put it flat again. Does this sound like the fan just needs cleaning?
Also, I would like to give it a little more power, and I don't think it's worth buying a new notebook, as the v2030 has been very reliable, and I would just like a little extra power. I was thinking of putting in 1gb Ram and a Pentium M cpu. However, I have looked at this topic http://www.amilo-forum.com/lhtopic,492,0,asc,v2030+20fan+20buzzing,0.html and it says there is a problem with these processors. I don't really understand if it would be better to stick with the Celeron. Would it be worth the extra money to upgrade to a Pentium?

Edit: I think I understand that if I upgrade to a Pentium I need a 735 rather than a 740? Is that right? Or is it any processor than is a 7x5 model?

Same problem, some observations

Postby blubadger » Sun Nov 04, 2007 7:47 pm

I have the same fan problem. I bought the machine new 18 months ago and it never leaves its clean desk. Not very impressed.

Seems to be an issue of friction somewhere inside the fan assembly. I opened the back and unscrewed the fan from its mounting while it was still running. Changing the angle causes it to go in to slow down and start buzzing. Brushing it gently causes it to go back to silent full speed. I cleaned the assembly fairly well but the buzzing started again after a few hours.

I'm going to try the trick suggested here:

Anything to avoid spending a fortune on a new fan that will probably malfunction too. In the meantime I've unplugged the thing to get some silence. As I understand it, there's no risk of the machine being damaged, just of the processor slowing down.

I cleaned the fan too, which as you say, fixed it for a day or two. Now the buzzing gets louder and quieter for no reason. I'm wondering whether to put some more oil on the spindle, because although it sounds as if it is slowing down, I have kept monitoring the temperature, and it is still normal. I;ll put some in and let you know if it makes any improvement.

Update.

I bought some oil "specialised for micro-devices"; removed the fan; washed it gently to remove all possible debris; dried it very very thoroughly; put the smallest possible drop of the oil into the spindle hole; reinserted the fan. All vibration has disappeared. So far.

Incidentally, in my case unplugging the fan turned out to be a bad idea. Within an hour or two the machine had started to overheat terribly and the processor went into semi-hibernation. I guess that this is how you know when there's a problem.

If the vibration starts again, I'll report here.
