LI1818 Wireless

Postby rizzrat » Mon Oct 22, 2007 9:28 am

Morning,

I can see there are a lot of threads about wireless on the Amilos. I have the Li1818 and tried the Ubuntu Gutsy LiveCD. I got no wireless. Which is a shame because i really cannot stand Vista (Having made the choice to go to pcworld after Dell delayed my Ubuntu laptop by 2 months!!).

I am a pretty novice linux user so dont want to wipe my HDD before i am sure i can set up the wireless confidently. I see that people are testing an installer for the 17 series, would this work? I suppose i can download it and try it on the liveCD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have an Atheros wireless adapter? Try "lspci" and look for "Network controller".

Vista shows my wireless device as Fujitsu-Siemens WLAN. Device driver by Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS163u). Whatever that means.

How do i find out similar info in Ubuntu?

D'oh, i am a terminal newbie. I did it and there was no network controller. There was an Ethernet controller (Realtek RTL-8139c) but i dont think thats what i am after.

Going into the Ubuntu Device manager i noticed a few plug and play devices with unknowns. Namely

INT0800
PNP0103
SYN0804

Have no idea what they are but i assume that Ubuntu doesnt have the drivers for the new fujitsu-siemens wireless?

Yes, it does appear so. Please post the output of "lsusb", maybe it's connected via USB.

Might have found something...

Bus 005 Device 002 :ID 0bf8:100f - Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

Some sort of internal device.

Yes, probably this is it.
Maybe ndiswrapper works, it uses the Windows drivers. I don't know of any linux driver for this hardware.

Sounds like a plan. ndiswrapper is a complete mystery to me. Are there any idiot walkthroughs on how to use it. Also would it work with the livecd instead of an install? I really want to make sure it works before i zap my HDD.

Should work, but I'm not sure, never tried it.

Kinda curious for a working solution too, I also have an li1818 and having many problems with drivers including wireless. So far wireless issue is the only thing stopping me from using ubuntu full time

Wireless Chipset

Postby redregie » Tue Dec 25, 2007 6:01 pm

I tried phoning the support line here in the UK. The technician was not at all helpful and wasn't interested in finding this information out.

We're not asking for them to make linux work, just to give enough information to to allow us to do it ourselves. Perhaps they are embarrassed about the contents of the laptop, or is it a secret?

Can anybody from Fujitsu Siemens say the what the wireless chipset is in the Amilo Li 1818?

I used ndiswrapper with the livecd of gutsy and used every driver provided on my backup cds in the wireless section. no joy. the drivers seemed to install ok but wouldnt link with the hardware..

there are also dowloadable drivers from the fujitsu site, but they reckon its an intel pro wireless which it certainly is not.

I have a LI 1818, and installed the SIS163U WLAN Drivers. Download from http://www.sis.com (I can't post a direct link since you have to check agreeboxes and things). In the wlan_163_r105.zip you will find R105_Logo/SetupNT/USB/sis163u.inf - this should work.

If you don't know what to do with the driver. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... diswrapper if running ubuntu...

if the li1818 is anything like the li1718 then loading the driver is not enough because you probably have enable the wireless to auto activate on boot in the bios & you may need to also use the acerhk module to enable a wireless on/off button that may be on the laptop (a row of 4 buttons on the li1718). Ubuntu 8.04 hardy Heron has the acerhk module in the kernel. your right for now you may need to use ndiswrapper for the driver. Go onto the Ubuntu forums and see if there is anyone else there that can help.
