AMILO A 7620 XP-M Memory upgrade problem

Postby screamingtree » Tue Oct 30, 2007 4:37 pm

Hi all,

quick question about a frustrating problem encountered today on my AMILO A 7620 XP-M. I've just bought two (identical!) Kingston 1 Gb DIMMs so that I can upgrade the memory on the laptop (which came with two 256 ones).

While both of the new DIMMs seem to work on their own (tried them on different slots alone and together) when I try them both on they can be seen in BIOS but Windows XP refuse to load! Same happens when I try to combine a 1 Gb DIMM with one of the old 256 MB ones (again mixing them up too to make sure it is not a slot or individual DIMM problem). If I leave ONE of the 1 Gb DIMMS in on its own it works (on any of the two slots).

Any idea what the problem is? The manual for the laptop suggests it can go up to 2 GBytes so hopefully that is not what I am doing wrong. Moreover, it was suggested to me by a friend that a format of the hard disk might solve this since it looks like a Windows prob, is that right you think? I'd hate to format it and lose hours on that and still not fix it!!!

Any ideas?

No, I don't think so.
Use memtest86+ to test your RAM - using just a single module, both, or all combinations... If you get errors, then it's definitely a hardware problem.
