Dead Amilo Li 1718

Postby BANCROFI » Mon Nov 19, 2007 2:49 pm

Dear all,

My new (2 months old) Amilo Li 1718 has suffered an untimely death.

When I start the machine up, the fan works and both the 2nd and 4th lights come on, whilst the screen is a lighted shade of black. After a short while the 4th light goes off,the screen goes dark and the fan falls silent. Nothing initiates/boots up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Ian,

Try the hardware reset as described in the FAQ.
If it doesn't help: warranty.

Many thanks for your reply.

The notebook will eventually initiate/boot, and start-up windows, however it takes much perserverence (10-20 attempts).

Could this suggest a driver/software/BIOS issue?

I can only repeat:

It worked before, so after ensuring that there are no temporary problems (therefore removing all power), it's a case for warranty.

(99% sure that this isn't a driver/software problem given you did the hardware reset and the problem remains.)

Many thanks.

What I'm confused by is why it will work after 10-20 attempts? Would making a boot disk help?

Best,

Aha! Someone else is experiencing this as well!! I'm sorry I can't yet provide you with a solution, only reassurance that it's not just you. I bought my Amilo in August and it died at the beginning of October with the exact symptoms you described. Tech support talked me through all sorts, but nothing worked so it went back under warranty (very efficient, away 9 days). Came back with a replacement hard drive and was working again. Since then I wanted to run XP rather than Vista, so bought a second hard drive and installed XP on it, keeping the original (replaced) HDD with Vista on, in case it needs to go back under warranty again.

Last night I powered up and once again got that feeling in the pit of my stomach as it demonstrated the same symptoms once again -- dead. Disconnected the battery and then re-powered and it would get to the Fujitsu-Siemens boot screen, get so far and then die again. I re-tried and this happened a few more times, so I went in to setup to see if it was a BIOS thing, but the only thing I noticed was that the boot order was USB first. So I changed it to HDD first. I know this shouldn't really make any difference, because it will try all locations in the list, but hey.

It now booted and displayed one of those error screens, something about Windows not shutting down properly or something, so I rebooted in 'Last known good configuration'. I can't remember if this worked (!) but I do remember eventually booting into safe mode and doing a system restore to an earlier date which was successful. It booted OK and was working fine. I'm dreading getting home tonight and powering up...... Will it, won't it? We shall see......

Sorry to ramble on a bit, but maybe my experience will be of help. I'm going to keep searching for solutions because there's obviously a fault somewhere if others are having the same expeience. It's dented my confidence in Fujitsu Siemens a bit though... Other than this problem I'm pleased with it.

Ok, I get something similar...

Power on and the power light comes on. No screen or any other lights apart from sometimes (not always) the HDD (4th) light is on.
Presumably it is not even getting to the BIOS in this state.
Leave it for approx 5 mins and power off by holding down the power button.
Power on again and all is well. Laptop is rock solid, runs for hours and even reboots occur normally.

The only issue is that initial power on from a "cold" state.

I have also a simular problem (Amilo M1437G). It first started with the processor halting, the screen remained. I have opened the laptop and noticed that the fan does not turn at all. When trying to repower the lights are lit for about one second and then switches off again. After a long time off I succeeded at launching the pc back on and luckily managed to backup my project :) .
To fix the fan I have soldered the connection to another point but unfortunately this is not a complete solution.

I will try this hardware reset if the laptop wants to restart...

Hardware reset did not help but I have located the problem. The processor stops running because the temperature rise, even with the fan on external supply. This means that the heatpipes don't work anymore. I used to build industrial pc's for my former boss, so I know that cooling is a hot item for proper pc funtionality. Before trying to find a replacement cooling I want to test again with a forced cooling (don't know how yet...).
