Upgrading the CPU on the 8820

Postby ashleymills » Thu Nov 22, 2007 10:03 am

Hi,

Anyone familiar with the 8820 will be familiar with the overheating problems. Whilst the traditional remedy to this is regular heatsink de-dusting, I seek a more radical solution, not only to mitigate this periodic maintanence, but also to stop it sounding, in the words of another user "like a 747 taking off".

I seek to replace the CPU with an M chip that requires much less cooling. I am even willing to drop in power in the quest for a silent 8820.

Are there any CPU's which are compatible with the 8820? Which ones?

Regards

Ashley

I think a *possible downgrade is Mobile Pentium 4-M which is 35W. But I'm absolutely not sure if it'll run on your computer! The specifications doesn't include such an information, but the socket is one and the same, and the voltage should be supported.

Pentium-M is something different, it's also socket 479 slot, but I think it can't work with these old chipsets.

So the 8820 is a 478 socket?

Actually yes...
But there are different types, and 479 is nemed so just for a differnce.
Briefly said, I think it won't work, to change between different generations of processors. But anyway my supposition has nothing to prove it...

You are right. There is a board which allows 479 to be used in selected 478 mobos:

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3& ... odelmenu=1

but I guess incompatible with 8820 mobo and probably too big anyway.

Damn it!

It works only with some asus mb models(as I know) and it's unthinkable to put an adapter into a notebook. But nobody* knows what is th difference in the pinconfiguration, and that's why still there isn't a pinmod.
