USB Power requirements

Postby avegso » Thu Nov 22, 2007 6:27 pm

Hi.
I have an AMILO L7320 Laptop with 3 USB Ports. I am planning to purchase a USB type Portable Hard Drive that does not require external power supply. I checked the USB power requirements for the product that is Western Digital and requires 650mA of current; however my USB ports supplies only 500mA per Hub. Plus I believe to fire up the device require much more current. I am hesitant to purchase this product, since I don't want to damage my notebook. Does anybody has a similar device installed and does it work as it suppose to? Thank you kindly for your feedback and advice.

I've heard that in such situations are used two USB ports to deliver more current. If this is not an option from the HDD vendor, it's obvious that 500 is not 650

Thanks for your feedback Itanium :) . You are right about the USB Y cable. As a meticulous PC/MAC user I spent almost eight hours reading reviews and comments about USB External HD-s on the internet. Today, I took the courage and went out to purchase a 160GB Western Digital Passport unit, since it was on special. Let me tell you, it worked like a charm with my Amilo. I did a full backup in 20 minutes (50GB) and I am still keeping it on just to stress test my system. I could recommend to anyone. :D
