Amilo L6820 HDD

Postby turich » Sat Nov 24, 2007 8:37 pm

Hi,

I've got a 4-year old notebook (L6820) and I'd like to change its HDD.
Could somebody tell me, what is the size limit of a hdd for my computer?
Can I change my 40GB hdd for a 120,160 or 250 Gb hdd?

thanks for your help, turich)

120GB is safe to choose, just note that it's almost sure that you must look for Parale ATA HDD. For 160GB and above there is a chance the BIOS not to detect it correctly due to possible lack of 48 Bit LBA. However if you try it's possible to run successfully such a big HDD.

Ok.
If I'm not mistaken, there is an IDE HDD in my notebook.
So I can be sure, that an IDE Hdd of 120 Gb would be safely running under my BIOS and on my NB, is that right?

//thx, for your help ;)

Yes. That's what I know. Still it's good to look for a test.

Hi Itanium and turich,

Thanks for posting this thread and the replies.

Turich, have you upgraded your hard drive yet, and if you did what drive did you eventually go for.

I'm still confused as to what size (2.5" or 3.5") and what type of drive is required? I know IDE = ATA, but should the ATA just be the basic ATA or some other version of ATA?

Thanks

When we talk about an internal laptop HDD, it's undoubtedly 2.5". There are two common standarts for controller comunication ATA and SATA(the newer one). The most recent(from about two years ago) computers use SATA.

It's a normal HDD. Just tell what's your laptop model.
I don't know if you need ATA or SATA.

thebigun, no i haven't yet, but i'm going for a hdd from samsung or western digital (like that which you showed).

Samsung HM121HC or Western Digital WD1200BEAE, (i dont know, if they've got the same type-number outside of russia)
They're both 120 GB hdd, but I'm going to ask soon in a specialized shop, if i could take a hdd with 160 Gb or more for my l6820.

if you want us to help you, you've to tell us your laptop model or if you know - the hdd-type in your notebook ;)
