Considering to buy Amilo Xi2528, can I install Fedora 7, Xp?  Topic is solved

I hope to configure a notebook (Amilo Xi2528 looks great) with Xp and Fedora. I'd greatly appreciate if anyone with experience at this could give me their thoughts. I have read some threads about Xp and that looks possible, just supply the RAID drivers. Fedora 7 ???

Afaik there's a problem with the DVD drive - but it works with kernel 2.6.24 (which is not yet released...).

Thanks Aaron, model choice, gimicks or leading technology

The next kernel will likely be ready soon so the DVD drive should be then good. I have not had much luck finding reports on the Amilo Xi2528. The couple reports I did find suggested the notebook is fast but eats up the battery life very quickly.

I have not found anything out about the sound capabilities. Is a subwoofer very unusual for a notebook? Is it a big plus for this notebook's sound or more of a new gimick. Are there many manufactures offering a RAID system in a notebook? Can the two drives be used as two normal drives (ie: one for windows, one for Linux)?

I am starting work with a new company in January here in Germany. They use as a standard Notebook the very well known Lenovo T61p. If the Xi2528 would not be your choice as a 17" ASUS to compete with the Lenovo, what would be your choice in an ASUS product?
Yes I have never owned a notebook before and after I buy a 17" there will be a number of well trained individuals giving the unit a shake-down. Hopefully they will then say "good choice!" and I will complete this thread, or one on another model that you recommend to me.

Your help would be greatly appreciated,

Of course.

The Xi is from Fujitsu-Siemens, not Asus. But you can't really compare it to a Thinkpad - the Amilo isn't a business notebook and as such has some disadvantages. If you need it for your work, imho a Thinkpad will be much better.

I think I've read too many reports. It's too the point I've got it all confused now.

Linux support is good for the Thinkpad as well. I think it is time to get in line with my new colleges and forget the 17" screen. My wife is in purchasing for a middle sized company and they have started buying Fujitsu-Siemens Notebooks. Maybe someday for my own personal use.

Thanks a lot for your advice. I wrote a couple E-Mails a week ago to Fujitsu-Siemens tech support and got no answer. Now I know where to come back to in the future.

Take care,
