Try to search the ubuntu fora for they contain lot's of different guides!
If you still can't seem to find a proper answer, respond back here!

I have the wireless working perfectly using Wolvix Cub 1.1.0. It uses the Madwifi driver, a package named:
madwifi-0.9.3.1_2.6.21.5-i486-2wlv.
So, it seems that with Madwifi version 0.9.3.1, it plays.
Having used this laptop for a little while, I must say that Vista cripples it slightly less. This is not a good Linux user choice.
I don't have the Unichrome working, I have to use "stretched VESA". And the constant fans are a problem.

Still no luck with the display drivers?

You could try to download the openchrome driver from www.openchrome.org

compile it using:
apt-get install build-essential
apt-get build-dep openchrome

./configure
make
make install

change your xorg.conf to use the 'openchrome' driver and it *should* work!

@mjjzf:
I disagree that the li1705 is not a good Linux laptop. In my case everything works (with a little tweaking) except the headphone.
The fans can be shut up using acpi however they run with a reason - the temperature.

The only real downside to this laptop - in my opinion - is the battery. Just under 1 hour! :-(

No matter how cold it is, the fans run high, Any pointers on changing their settings?

In order to tackle the fan problem try:
http://www.trustonme.net/didactels/323.html
it is in French however you can figure it out quite easily. It didn't work for me though. None of my sensors are detected :s

Ctrl + Alt + F1 (works by default on every Linux afaik, not only Ubuntu)

Hello,

i've post this about making the internal LCD display working correctly at 1280x800, using the standard vesa driver
If you do not need acceleration it may be enough.
topic,962,-FSC-Amilo-Li1705-ubuntu-7-04.html

since this time, i've made a lot of tries (ves, openchrome, via...) and finaly get the best result using the Via official driver

the issue is to get it compile ... their scripts are not very up to date and needs to be tuned regarding the distribution you use.

I got them to comile on opensuse 10.3 and the generated modules are also working well on ubuntu 7.10 (2.6.22.14 for ubuntu and 2.6.22.17 for Opensuse)
If it may help (i never succeed in comiling them under ubuntu) i can post here the modules

This driver is the only one who gives me a good 1024x768 display on my external LCD TV and give me the xv acceleration to turn my amilio li 1705 onto a HTPC

Bye.
