Few question about my Li1818

Postby fish99 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 12:02 am

Hi,

Just a few questions I'm hoping someone can help with. Firstly is there anyway to change the behaviour of the touchpad at all? I was hoping I could either disable it using a key combination or set it to disable when I connect a USB mouse. Either of these things possible? I catch the touchpad all the time when typing, it's very annoying and makes text entry take twice as long. Just about the only option is to cover the touchpad. AFAIK it's not a synaptics touchpad btw.

2nd question - my wireless LAN doesn't start working until roughly 30-60 seconds after vista has finished loading up. Rather annoying. Anyone know of a fix?

Last question - don't suppose there's a battery with a bigger capacity that will fit this laptop instead of the 2000mAH one that it came with? I've searched everywhere. The battery is 4S2000-S1S3-04 (googling this gets zero hits).

Thanks in advance for all and any help.
Simon.

Fixed the first problem myself. It was a synaptics touchpad, and by installing the synaptics drivers (which are NOT included on the laptop support CD) it fixed the typing problem. The synaptics drivers have a feature called PalmCheck which can tell the difference between a finger touching the touchpad and your palm when typing. Typing is just like the touchpad wasn't there now! :D

I would recommend installing the synaptics driver for anyone having the same problem. Drivers are here-

Just took a chance and installed the drivers. Try it, you can always delete them.

I've also had fantastic success by deleteing Vista from my Li 1818 and installing XP (I also gained hard-drive space by deleting the recovery partition, I've now just got a single partition). Every single problem I had with the laptop under Vista is completely gone under XP, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Bare in mind you need to (with Li 1818 at least) integrate the intel sata drivers (for XP) into an XP image with NLite, otherwise XP setup can't see your hard-drive. I would also recommend downloading all the XP drivers before you start.

That's the disclaimer, so here's what's improved-

-bootup is far quicker, and once booted up the laptop is ready to use, whereas under Vista it would chug away on the HDD for another 2 mins (even though my Vista was heavily optimized by myself).

-wireless internet starts up within 2 seconds of windows booting now and always works. In Vista it only came on a third of the time and even then it took 30-60 seconds to start.

-wireless internet doesn't now switch off whenever I remove (using the proper stop device procedure) any external drive, as it used to in Vista

-applications start quicker and run better.

-gaming performance and compatibility has improved considerably.

Just by putting XP on, it's like I've got a new more powerful laptop. IMO Vista is too much for most of these budget laptops.

Thanks very much for this. I was fed up of Vista hanging, so switched to XP following the same route.
I had problems getting wireless to work (driver wouldn't install), but on another thread I found the resolution - the device in device manager was under USB devices! and the solution was to allow the laptop to search the internet for the driver (rather than attempting to install it myself), then reboot.
Next, I installed the synaptics drivers, and regained control of my keyboard. Wow been suffering with that touchpad taking control for months now!!
Thanks for saving me much keyboard frustration :)
