amilo d 1845 possible heat problem ?

Postby rusty1 » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:01 am

Hi (new member) --great forum

got the amilo d 1845, which was bought second - hand.
running win xp sp2 with p4 3.06 ghz cpu & 512 ddr memory.
decent looking lappy, but has never worked right :?
machine freezes (no keyboard / mouse control) in windows almost immediately , not software related as it also does this when in the BIOS.
Think it might be heat - related, as it usually runs longer with a 10" desktop fan blowing through it. pc wizard 2008 states temps as 75*c for both cpu & ACPI thermal, and 31*c for hdd (this was temps shown the last time it crashed) pc wizard dont show temp for GPU or memory.
Anyone got an 1845 which runs, if so, whats the temp readings ?
thanks.
p.s. have stripped & cleaned & rebuilt this lappy + changed cpu and memory -- but still same problem, so i'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Still working on it now, gonna try memtest + bios update, so i'll re-post if a solution found --cheers all

Update --reckon it a bios rev problem, mine is 1.02 and the latest seems to be 1.04. downloaded & burnt iso from fuj siemens site but what is the command i enter from the a/ prompt ?

Try "flash".

Did you check the heat-conductive paste? Maybe you have to renew it (or too much could cause this problem, too).

Hi Aaron

Yes, cleaned up cpu and renewed thermal paste before. Was going to use artic silver, but local shop advised against using this ? Just used standard thermal paste, but i might strip and clean both fans + chips & re-seat with fresh paste again. Another thing, lappy seems to run longer (no crash) when running on just battery power ? Just to add to the confusion ---- :)

Probably it doesn't heat up that fast on battery (due to power saving techniques).
And I want to emphasize: use only a little bit of thermal paste, too much can cause such problems!

I don't know a reason against arctic silver.

Hi Aaron/all

not solved prob yet, still random crashes despite strip + rebuild.
Event viewer gives no clues to the prob, don't know of any software diag progs that i have not used, which might shed any light on things?
Have a hint that it may be mobo or psu related, but -----
Going to try removing x-head screws from cpu heatsink --and cut a slot for use of a plain driver. This may give more torque, and seal the cpu & heatsink better. (similar to the x-box fix) Also got mx2 arctic paste to retry. If this fails, then looks like i'll surrender !!

update --- well, still the same.
No further forward. Still random crashes.
Once crashed , system won't start unless lappy is left for a bit.
Starting up in safe mode makes no difference either.
I reckon maybe a mobo fault then, as i've tried everything else ? ---
Don't like to get beat, but think i'll surrender on this one for now.
Any other suggestions welcome !

regards

you could try speedswitch, set the cpu to full performance, this prevents the throttling which always froze my 1845 in xp, i had the same issue in ubuntu with it and killed acpi which again fixed it.

speedswitchxp is freeware by the way.
