V2020 (Fan not cooling - kicking in)  Topic is solved

Postby smee » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:58 pm

Hello,

I have just experienced a problem with my Amilo v2020.
The Fan just stopped working, on inspection the fan/heat-sink was clean, no signs of wear or electrical damage.

I rang the Hot-line, and I was offered a repair solution by sending the whole laptop in for repair. In my wisdom (if you can call it that) I decided to order a new CPU cooling unit thinking that the thing had probably worn out.

I installed the new component and the problem is not resolved, at least I have a spare cooling unit!!

Could this problem be caused by a BIOS problem (e.g. virus)?

Diagnostics tried:
I tried the following things: Hard drive removed, tried to boot from following CD's:- Recovery / Repair / anti-virus / linux, (the laptop still overheated and shut down)

I am sure that the fan kicked in once for a brief moment, during my attempts but I have no solution at the moment.

I need to be sure that the problem cannot be resolved by me before I send it in for repair under guarantee.

Could anyone give me some advice before I decide to send my Laptop in for repair, I have run out of ideas, and I do not know what could be the cause of this problem. I realise that I will be responsible for repair costs if the problem has been caused by me, (e.g. virus/ configuration ect.)

Try the hardware reset mentioned in the FAQ, maybe it helps.

Because the problem also exists in Linux, I think it's safe to say that a virus is very unlikely.

Problem solved - V2020 (Fan not cooling - kicking in)

Thank you aspettl (Aaron)

I tried the hardware reset found here ( http://www.amilo-forum.com/topic,11,-Hardware-F-A-Q.html )

The reset resolved the problem to my surprise, I was not aware that I could achieve such a reset, the only thing I tried previous to this was to go into BIOS, check the settings and save them again.

Your help has not only solved the issue, but it has also increased my knowledge, and saved me money, because I was able to resolve the issue in just a few steps, and it was not an issue that was covered in the warranty.

I will consider extending my warranty now before it runs out, the service hot-line is excellent + competent.

Thanks

Smee

Additional info as a reference

The BIOS menu is accessed by pressing the F2 button after powering the laptop up.

The battery can be located on the v2020 by removing the large panel with the air vents on the underside of the laptop, I recommend that you use the right sized screwdrivers.

I have to clean the Thermal Module (official name for the whole heat sink + fan assembly) every 6 months to unblock the slits on the copper heat sink. I find that they block up with dust, and prevent the fan from dispersing the generated heat from the CPU.

If I didn't do this the Laptop would just power down whilst trying to boot up. This is because the Laptop is overheating.

Hope this helps someone.

Great :D

Good idea, but here in Germany it's only possible in the first two or three months... so just make sure it's possible.

I have just visited the fujitsu-siemens-shop and they seem to have a restriction on buying extended cover. I will have to give them a call, it seems a bit outrageous to exclude people out of buying cover.

I wonder why they do not inform people.

3 Year Fujitsu Siemens Warranty Extension - Courier Collect & Return - For Amilo Pro V1xxx, V2xxx, V3xxx Series (must be purchased within 90 days of buying product) £ 76.19 inc VAT
