Installing linux on FSC Amilo Xa 2528/24p

Postby KiAnKo » Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:46 am

Hi

Have anyone managed to install LINUX? I have tried Ubuntu (32 & 64bit), Knoppix, DSL, SystRescCD and more. All of them have stopped right after the start menu choices... I get a message like:

    BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu4) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter "help" for a list of built-in dommands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turnd off
(initramfs) 38.108000 hda: drive not ready for command

38.108000 hda: drive not ready for command
38.108000 hda: drive not ready for command
38.108000 hda: drive not ready for command

Could it be SATA? RAID? Linux Kernal???

I have read about but haven't tried yet: http://www.instalinux.com/

I read http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/117679/ about a guy who has installed UBUNTU 7.10, but can't get WLAN, DVD or WEBCAM to work. Have you???

differens between FSC AMILO Xa 2528 and FSC AMILO Xi 2528???

Postby KiAnKo » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:18 am

From what I have heard... the problem during installation is due to the LINUX KERNAL, since FEDORA 8 and SLACKWARE works.

Maybe I only have to wait... By using http://www.instalinux.com others have been able to install LINUX on FSC AMILO Xa 2528 (AMD processor)... (Problems reported have been DVD, WEBCAM, WLAN and SOUND).

I have seen that FSC AMILO Xi 2528 (INTEL processor) works with UBUNTU and LINUX without problems...

So, is the a big differens between FSC AMILO Xa 2528 and FSC AMILO Xi 2528???

Afaik there is a problem with the controller for the DVD drive, Kernel 2.6.24 has solved this, I think...

Yes. It has a different mainboard (other chipset, SATA controller, ...)

Regards
Aaron

PS: Fedore and Slackware is also Linux.
More precisely: Ubuntu, Knoppix, Debian, SUSE, Red Hat, Fedora, Slackware etc. all use the Linux kernel. The system itself is mainly GNU software. The difference is "only" which versions they use, which modifications they made and of course the choice which software to integrate (if there are several alternatives).

I used to have RED HAT 5 and 6... that's before it was FEDORA!!! What I meant was (between the lines) that GNU/LINUX works with some versions of KERNEL (newer ones, like the one that SLACKWARE and FEDORA uses), but UBUNTU and others uses an older version that is not recognized, in combinantion with XA-hardware.

The XA (AMD) versions seems not to work (for most LINUX distros), but the other XI (INTEL) does. Strange that so much differs...

Hopefully, this was much clearer now...

You can install Linux on a 2528xa. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.10. The problem is that the dvd/cd-drive does not work. It works enough to boot from but stops working when the installation progresses. Use a network install and you can get passed that problem. The things that won't work (currently) are dvd, webcam and wlan but it's still better than vista. Oh, and kernels newer than 2.6.24-21 don't work at all. Good luck.

A friend has installed UBUNTU and with some help from a German forum and some other links, I think most of things works now, including: WLAN, DVD, WEBCAM, CARD READER etc

The same problems with this notebook are also discussed in the german amilo-forum. User Ritchie made the DVD-drive work in OpenSuse 11.0 by upgrading to kernel 2.6.28. As far as I know some other users followed his advise on Ubuntu 8.10 and got a working DVD-drive too. I don't know anything about the other devices.

I think the current Sidux-version supports the DVD-drive out of the box since it already uses kernel 2.6.28. But we already know that you still can't install from a CD/DVD with this kernel.
The next Fedora- and Ubuntu-releases should also come with kernels >= 2.6.28.

I found out that Knoppix 6 boots perfect from cd/dvd and the dvd-drive is seen by the os it also uses the 2.6.28 kernel
So i is possible to boot from cd/dvd, now we have to find out what makes the difference and try to use that for ubuntu or what ever distrubution

I'm pretty surprised that Knoppix boots fine. Can you please try to boot Sidux?
In the german forum I heared that Sidux didn't boot but they both use Kernel 2.6.28. So if Sidux really doesn't boot it must be due to some distribution-specific kernel-enhancements.
The alpha of Ubuntu 9.04 might also be worth trying. If it works, one could be optimistic that the final version will solve the problem for most of the Xa 2528/29-users. The same goes for Fedora 11 most likely coming with kernel 2.6.29.

I tried the Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 4 and no luck with that one so i has to be something more than the kernel alone, i am a noob with linux so i dont have the knowledge to find the difference, but maybe there is someone on this forum who can

Can you please try the alpha of Fedora 11 too?:
http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-prerelease

It would be easier to find the critical difference if one would at least have two distributions that work.

Debian 5 can't work since it uses older software than Ubuntu or Sidux.
Please try the i686-Live-CD listed on the linked page in my last post.
