Disabling AHCI Config to reinstall windows. Is this bad?  Topic is solved

Postby gmd06 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:55 pm

I had to reformat my Amilo Pro V2085 HDD due to a virus. I used a Win XP original installation CD-ROM but received the folowing error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". After researching the internet for a solution I opted for disabling the AHCI configuration mainly because the slipstreaming of a new install cd with the SATA driver is beyond my expertise. I don't even know where to find the driver for my system. Anyway, the disabling of the AHCI config seemed to work. I could boot from the CD and I have managed a new install of XP. I then tried to enable AHCI again but when I start up all i get is the blue screen telling me an error occured.

What effect, if any, will disabling the AHCI config have on my PC? What should I look out for? I have noticed that the system has crashed a few times but i'm putting this down to the Avast AV software that I have installed. Will my PC run any differently with AHCI disabled?

I would really appreciate any guidance on this. Thanks

creating a setup cd with integrated SATA drivers is quite easy using XP-ISO-builder http://tinyurl.com/35b4xg .
Use these drivers: http://www.amilo-forum.de/download.php?id=2977
Just read the hints that I wrote here topic,26,-Installation-of-Windows-XP-Home-Pro-PE-FAQs.html#45

Thanks for the advice. I created a new CD but ended up with the same problem.."Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". I think I may have added the wrong drivers to the CD. I followed your guide but got a bit confused with Step 6 of the XP-ISO-Builder. The drivers that I could choose from were:

INTEL(R) ICH9 SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop/Server/Workstation)
INTEL(R) 82801 HEM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E)
INTEL(R) 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)
INTEL(R) ICH8R/ICH9R SATA RAID Controller (Desktop/Server/Workstation)
INTEL(R) 82801HR/HH/HO SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop/Server/Workstation)
INTEL(R) 631xESB/632xESB SATA RAID Controller (Server/Workstation/ESB2)
INTEL(R) 631xESB/632xESB SATA AHCI Controller (Server/Workstation/ESB2)
INTEL(R) 82801GHM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH7MDH)
INTEL(R) 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
INTEL(R) 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
INTEL(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH)
INTEL(R) 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH6M)

I added all the drivers that I have highlighted in red. Am I allowed to add more than one? I was just guessing so there is every chance I got the wrong one. I have XP Home as my OS. Which of the above drivers is the right choice? Any ideas?

Thanks again. This time when I try to burn the ISO image Nero tells me that I need to insert the correct type of Media in my drive. I am trying to burn it on a CD-R and it insists on a DVD+R. This didn't happen the last time. It burned using a CD-R no problem last night. Any ideas?

do you have a CD-RW? Would be easier just in case you need some CDs for trying

Are you using Nero? Make sure that you have set the recoder type correctly. You have to tell Nero whether you want to burn a CD or DVD before you burn the image file.

If you have Nero 6, you can have a look at this pdf
http://www.winfuture-forum.de/index.php ... st&id=6468
It is in German, but I think you can see the important steps.

Borkar, thanks very much. Your advice worked well. The last problem I had was my own fault. Got it sorted. The CD worked really well and now I have XP installed and working properly. Once again..Vielen Dank für Ihre ganze Hilfe. Auf Wiedersehen von Schottland...I hope that is correct (online translation :D )
