computer wont run, will a bios update change anything?

Hi all, just joined as I have a problem...
About a month ago my amilo A series froze up and refused to boot windows xp. It was working in safe mode, but I decided to try and reinstall windows. The installation froze at about 36 minutes to go, while it was 'installing devices'.
I've given it to a guy to fix and he says it's not a hardware problem. He wants to put the old BIOS onto a flash drive and try and install a different version on to see if it works.
Is this risky in anyway? and is it likely to work? I don't know too much about the inner workings of computers so I wanted some advice first.

If there is a newer BIOS version, then it may help - but you can't really tell beforehand...

Ok thanks Aaron, but is there any chance that it would ruin the computer permanently?

If something goes wrong, then you'd have to change/reflash the BIOS chip (=> send the chip/mainboard/laptop to someone who can do this). So I wouldn't call it "permanent".

Did the other guy check the RAM modules, do the "hardware reset" (see FAQ), try another Windows cd?

He checked the RAM and a different windows cd, i'll let him know about this hardware reset next time I talk to him. He says now that the BIOS chip should be replaced, any ideas how to find out ones that are compatible with my computer?
