Brand new Amilo Si-1520, battery has disappeared, help!

Postby jamie » Fri Aug 11, 2006 10:27 pm

I bought an Amilo Si-1520 yesterday. When we tried it briefly in the shop, it ran off the battery for a minute or so.

After getting it home I plugged it into the mains, played with it a bit (install Firefox, nothing fancy), then turned it off and let it charge overnight.

The next day I played with it some more, and then I removed the mains while it was running, and it turned itself off! I was expecting it to run off battery while I moved it, of course.

After rebooting (with mains back in), I checked in the Windows control panel and it said the battery was missing. But the battery is in, and it's never been touched.

Then I looked at the battery light on the front, which should be on and it's not...

So I powered it down, removed mains, removed the battery, put the battery back in, put the mains back in, and rebooted... just incase of some dirty contact with the battery.

But again, no battery.

I tried that again, same result.

This is a brand new Si-1520 I bought yesterday. Now I'm worried and I'll have to send it back under warranty.

But first I thought I'd check if it's a known software/BIOS problem rather than broken electronics.

Oh, I've tried the hardware reset mentioned elsewhere on this forum: remove mains, remove battery, hold down power button for 10 seconds. That hasn't made any difference. Also the BIOS version is already 1.07 so there is no update.

Anyone recognise this problem?

Thanks,
-- Jamie

you should be able to change the notebook with a new one. Ask in the shop where you bought it.

It would take me 4-5 hours to go to the shop plus travel expense (it's in London; I'm in Oxford where we don't have good computer shops), and I cannot take the time off, so I'll use the warranty collect-and-replace instead. Any idea how long that usually takes?

Thanks,
-- Jamie (sad that it's not a trivial BIOS problem)

Thanks. That's a long time! Do they ship it all the way back to the country where it's made, eh?

Anyway, I called Amilo tech support, and they told me I have to take it back to the shop anyway, and gave me a DOA code. So I've been back to the shop. It took 6 hours for the round trip and shop time, grr. But Micro-Anvika, the shop in London, were very helpful and let me in even though they were closed when I got there, and replaced it with the minimum of fuss.

So hopefully I have a shiny new perfect one now :)

(The product QA engineer in me is left wondering what thousands of little faults go undetected in new laptops generally... until someone tries to use the faulty bit, months or years after they bought it. There doesn't seem to be any mechanism for checking every part of the system after it's left the factory. I guess I was lucky it was something really obvious on mine. Even that, I didn't notice for a couple of days.)
