Hey, if you check the processor speed, it should probably running about 600mhz!

This upgrade did also not work with the poster of this topic, because if you see the last picture with the Computer specs it shows in the red part 3 numbers and then the abbrevation mhz (***mhz) :x

Its a shame that the poster made this mistake, because we both spend money on a processor wich probably will never work without a proper bios update from Fujitsu Siemens(wich we probably never get) :(

Hello Eveyone

I have also found this tutorial by a serch engine. I purchased the exact same processor through Ebay.
My processor runs at around 600 MHZ which is the bottom of this Pentium M 1.7 CPU. I tried everything with software ( widows power set as desktop). I have tried Notebook Hardware Control as you suggested, but still unable to change the voltage and CPU speed. ANY SOLUTION??????

Hello Everyone

SOLUTION FOUND!! I just posted my message. Since then I read this post on this forum. "Why does my CPU only clock on 600-1000 MHz?" , this is a post on this amilo-forum. As it suggested I downloaded RM Clock from its website (the newest version) run it AND NOW MY PROCESSOR RUNS at 1.7 MHZ!!!!!!

Everybody should try.

Just only installing RMCLOCK is indeed THE solution!

IT WORKS!

Thanks for the advise!

OH DARN! My processor is defect! :(
When i turned of RMclock in Windows, I got a BSOD, afterthis I recieved artifacts at my bios screen.. my processor died. :(

I reinstalled the stock celeron and this works... :(

PEOPLE, I give up! a 1.7ghz is just to difficult for this V2030!

Sorry folks I have only just seen the reply's to this thread after all this time.

My processor runs fine at 1.7GHz, you need to adjust the speedstep technology of the processor. Not only does it run fine at 1.7 GHz it also draws a lot less power than when it was running the 1.5GHz Celeron as I have lowered the voltage quite dramatically without issue. I am at work at the moment but when I get home this evening I will show the doubters how to step the speed up from 600MHz (this is a feature to save energy which can be shut down), a little browsing of this forum would show you how to do it but some people are just lazy I suppose.

OK sit tight, screenshots coming later tonight.

OK, so here's how you clock the speed up to 1.7GHz and drop the voltage to 1.02v.

First you need to go here and download Notebook Hardware Control (much better than RM CLOCK for this job imho). Once you have downloaded and installed this program you need to click on the 'CPU Speed' tab and select 'max performance' in the box next to the power adaptor icon.

Image

Next you need to click on the 'Voltage' tab and put a tick in the little box next to multiplier 6 and then set the voltage value to 0.972v, then put a tick in the multiplier 17 box and set the voltage to 1.020v. I wouldn't set these voltage values any lower than I have here unless you are going to stress test the machine with Prime95, I'm not going to get into that here but if you already know how it works then go for it. Selecting lower voltage settings than I have suggested here without taking the precaution of stress testing could result in blue screens - you have been warned!

Image

Now you have changed these values your V2030 should run at 1.7GHz when plugged into mains power and 600MHz when running on battery, this is to save your battery as these notebooks don't have the greatest battery life anyway. The little voltage mod we have done here will also help towards power consumption with a knock-on effect of extending your battery charge time.

The next logical step here would be to reboot the notebook and open up Notebook Hardware Control and look at the values on the 'STATUS' tab, as you can see things are looking pretty good here.

Image

As a side note I have found these Intel Pentium M & Celeron M processors to be great for overclocking, however the pinmod will not work on this notebook as it doesn't have the required Intel BIOS. The 1.5GHz Celeron M I removed from this notebook is currently powering my in-car PC at 2GHz with no problems whatsoever, no heat issues, blue screens, not a single crash since I built the thing.

hello. i just bought a used v2030 on ebay.fr. i found the SLEP cpu's at pretty good prices there as well, and am planning to upgrade my cpu as described here (all the other CPU's that are compatible seem to be ridiculously expensive). the upgradeability of the laptop was one of the reasons i bought it. thanks for all the work that went into this tutorial. i'm also planning to upgrade the RAM (to 2G) and the HD (to 320G SATA). i'm figuring i can do all three of these upgrades for around 100 euros, which seems like a good deal, and brings my total cost for the v2030 with upgrades to less than a (used) netbook computer, and hopefully with alot better performance. i'll let you know how it goes. i'm a little concerned about the battery. not sure if the v2030 will ship with a 3 cell or 6 cell battery. hoping for the latter. has anyone every tried to add a bluetooth module to this laptop?

Afraid I can't tell you about the battery at the moment as I always run the laptop from a mains supply with the battery in a drawer some place so I have never taken an interest in the battery, I can tell you the battery life is not great though. I will take a look at the battery when I get home from work and get back to you on that one.

As for the bluetooth module, I assume you're talking about an internal device? If so that would mean substituting your wireless network adaptor, unless you are talking about a USB device? I have used a USB bluetooth device to connect the laptop to my mobile phone in the past but these days I just use the cable that shipped with the phone as the speed of a bluetooth connection is painfully slow compared with USB2.

Are you happy swapping out your memory and hard drive or would you like me to give you some instructions on that?

thanks for the response v2030. i'm relaxed about upgrading the hd and ram; i've done it plenty of times on desktops and a couple of times on laptops. but if there is anything special about the layout of the amilo i'm all ears. as for the bluetooth module, yes i was thinking about an internal module. it's not something i've ever done before, i guess i was hoping i could swap out the intel wifi module for a wifi+bluetooth module. i don't use bluetooth much myself, maybe every now and then for gps from my laptop. but i figure it's a nice to have. and it's stunning how cheap most of the upgrades are right now --HD, RAM and CPU; i'm figuring in a year or two that will no longer be true as new technologies come on line. if i could do the bluetooth upgrade at not great expense and not much hassle i'd go for it, otherwise i reckon i'll let it go. any idea where to find a repair or maintenance manual for this laptop? i found one for my old asus M6 and it's great. cheers. frogfeet
ps still waiting for my ebay purchases to arrive. laptop should be here by the end of week but RAM is coming from US and CPU won't ship until next week so it will be a few weeks before i get everything together and start taking it apart.

Re: V2030 Processor Upgrade Tutorial

Postby frogfeet » Sun Feb 08, 2009 11:48 pm

hello. well so far i've had mixed luck upgrading my v2030. i set out to do four things: upgrade the cpu to a pentium M, upgrade the hard drive to something bigger than 40Gigs, upgrade the memory to 2Gigs, and upgrade the battery to 4400mA. i guess i'm halfway successful. could use some help:

1. cpu upgrade: so-so: i found a 2GHz SLEM cpu on ebay and installed it using the instructions above. the hardware installation went wonderfully, actually easier than on a desktop computer, the instructions above are excellent and the innards of the amilo v2030 are really well laid out so that CPU, RAM, and HD are all really accessible. unfortunately the software upgrade is not so good. the cpu was stuck at 600MHZ, the same problem people had above. i installed the notebook hardware control software as described above, but it didn't change anything, both windows control panel and NCH still showed the CPUwas stuck at 600 MHZ. the laptop was slow and the fan never came on. (i even thought maybe i had damaged the fanm.) maybe i did something wrong. not sure what. then i installed RMClock and the cpu now seems to be running at 2gigahertz (RMclock says 2.01GHz and the cpu fan is on), and the laptop seems nice and responsive. but windows control panel still says 600MHz. i upgraded my bios to the latest version before upgrading the cpu and unfortunately it doesn't offer the option of loading optimal settings (only default settings), which according to some posts is necessary to enable speedstep for the cpu. i may still try a hardware reset as recommended in others posts. could use some advice here. i wonder if i should downgrade the bios to get the "load optimal settings" back.

2. hard drive upgrade: i tried to install a 320gigabyte, 7200 RPM SATA hard drive but it is not recognized in bios. i noted that the new SATA hard drive has a four pin power connection next to the data cable. the old hard drive did not. i'm thinking maybe the new hard drive needs dedicated power which is not available on this mobo. has anyone run into this problem? i had thought that even if bios had a 120Gig limit i'd at least have that much but i kind of think the new hard drive is not evening spinning up. bios says there is no hd installed. so i've gone back to the original 40gigabyte hard drive ;-(

3. RAM upgrade: i installed two 1Gigabyte DDR2 RAM modules but bios and windows only recognized half of the installed memory; i.e. only 512Megabytes on each module. in another post on this forum someone had the same problem and solved it by putting in older memory with 8, instead of 4, chips on each side. i've returned the new memory and the ebay seller is supposedly going to send me "low density" SoDimms that hopefully will work. in the meantime i'm back to the original 512MB module.

4. battery upgrade: ordered a battery from china on ebay and it came in less than a week, absolutely no problems! haven't tested it yet but hopefully it will last twice as long as the 2200Mah battery that the v2030 shipped with (used).

i'll update this as i (hopefully) resolve these problems.
regards, frogfeet

Ignore the windows clock speed, that is a Microsoft bug. If Notebook Hardware Control says 2gig then that's the one to trust.
One thing I have learned in my career in IT is to stay away from cheap memory, Kingston is fairly low cost and has never caused me any headaches.
Those four pins on your HDD are to select between 1.5Gb/s and 3Gb/s and I bet if you put a jumper on there to limit the speed your HDD will work. I have also tried installing a 3Gb/s 7200RPM drive with the same result. This HDD is now in my carPC which takes between 10 and 15 seconds to boot, so those faster HDD's do make a difference.
Keep us updated with your progress, it'll be good to see what you achieve with one of these old machines. It'll probably be a while 'till I'm back here as my spare time is very limited at the moment and what spare time I do have I'm dedicating to my car PC which isn't too far from completion now but there's always room for improvement!

well, mission accomplished. as of this morning.

it took awhile, but i got this old v2030 where i wanted it. i bought it used on ebay because it looked like a good deal and because although i've never owned a fujitsu siemens computer, i always had the vague impression that they were well engineered (japanese/german design and build, dunh!). but in hindsight this is a good laptop for upgrades for a couple of reasons. firstly, the layout is nice and everything (hd, memory-- all of it , cpu) is easily accessible, you don't have to monkey with the keyboard; and secondly, it has pretty high quality and easily upgradeable components -- a SATA HD; and DDR2 memory. i have an asus M6N and an acer aspire 1690 laptop, both built about the same time as this v2030, and they both have PATA drives and DDR1 memory, so more limited upgrade potential.

anyway here's how the v2030 looks now after her "makeover":

CPU: 2gig SL7EM intel pentium M cpu (in lieu of the 1.5Gig Celeron M that came stock). bought it on ebay for about $60. could've gotten the 1.7 Gig SL7EP cpu for about a third of the price but figured i'd let my hair down on this one. followed the instructions in this post and it works grandly.

HD: 160Gig, 5400 RPM HD (WD1600BEVS). Had problems as described above trying to get a 320Gig 7200 RPM SATA2 HD to work -- wasn't recognized in Bios. the SATA 1 drive works like a charm. (WD also makes a 250Gig 5400 RPM SATA1 drive which I'm sure would work too.) i'm not sure if the problem with the first drive was the SATA1 vs SATA2 interface (1.5Gbs vs 3Gbs) or the RPMs (5400 vs 7200). maybe for the fun of it i'll try to jumper down the 7200 RPM SATA2 drive to 1.5Gbs (SATA1) to see if that works. either way its a huge improvement over the 40Gig drive that came stock. the 160Gig SATA1 drive that worked was only around $45 on the internet.

Memory: 2Gigs Kingston "low density" memory (KVR533D2S4K2/2G, kit of 2). the original memory i bought on ebay didn't work, each 1 Gig DIMM was recognized as only 512Megs. after reading some other posts here and elsewhere i decided to try "older" DIMMs with 8 chips on each DIMM (vs 4). the ebay vendor (who had advertised the original DIMMs as compatible with the v2030) was cool about exchanging them, although i had to pay for shipping twice. the new "old" DIMMs work like a charm. Memory is cheap; think i paid more for postage than for the actual DIMMs.

Battery: Bought a 6 cell li-ion battery with double the life of the stock 3 cell battery from a chinese merchant on ebay for about $45. battery arrived faster than anything else i ordered on ebay or elsewhere on line and i'm very happy with the purchase. should extend battery time from 1.5 to 2.5/3 hours.

so i spent about $200 for the used laptop (great condition) and about another $200 (spread over 6 weeks, hence easier on the paycheck) for a pretty nice machine which, i think, blows away the little ePc's that seem to sell for at least as much.
