changing cpu : amilo d 1840 p4 3.2

Postby eddiehitler73 » Tue May 06, 2008 8:50 pm

thinking about changing the cpu on my amilo d 1840 laptop.
currently has the factoey installed pentium p4m 3.2ghz 800mhz chipset SiS648FX but is overheating alot.
have not yet tried to put new thermal paste on the heatsink as several computer repair shops have advise me this will not do anything.
One repair shop have advise me to change the cpu.
which one should i go for? a centino model?
will this work and can anyone give me some specs that i need like the socket number etc
i am a novice at this but am driven mad by this laptop and currently thinking about giving it up and buying a new laptop.
any help appreciated

A little late answer so I don´t know if it´s of any use at this late time but here goes:

If I´m not mistaken it´s a regular socket 478 in these models meaning as long as your BIOS supports it you could get a slower regular desktop P4 CPU socket 478. If you look at the CPU using CPU-Z application it says socket 478 mPGA but the 478 is a mPGA in desktops as well. If you can use Centrino I don´t know but maybe a 2,4Ghz 533MHz FSB. My old Amilo used a 3,06GHz 533 FSB using the exact same chipset.

***EDIT*** Confirmed, I´ve just tried this on a friends Amilo that had thermal problems. We replaced the 3,06 with a 2,53 (later productiondate) and it worked perfectly. Heat went down considerably. It blows cool air from the exhaust when surfing the web, earlier it was quite hot even in idle. It takes a 20 minute run of 3DMark 2003 to get the fans to rev up and they do not go to maximum even then.

We lost hyperthreding and 500Mhz in the process but on the other hand the CPU does not throttle down due to heat and the fans don´t rev up unless doing something very cpu intensive. It is not noticeably slower.
