2 week old Amilo pi 2515. Several issues

Postby RichC » Sun May 11, 2008 1:20 pm

Good morning one and all,
This is my first visit here (as I have only recently become and owner of a FS Amilo notebook) and, unfortunately, it is with several issues that I arrive.
I hope someone may be able to suggest a few things rather than me just sending the whole thing back and asking for my money back.

I have had the Amilo for 2 weeks. Bought it new in the UK and it fitted the bill for my requirements. Mostly personal use but with the ability to cover working from home when required.
But I am typing this on my ancient Compaq Presario 2810T !

I took the Amilo away with me to Germany, where I am working for a time. Within 5 days it had locked up on me.
Scenario. Was listening to BBC radio via web then closed web applications and disconnected from web via the icon.
Went for a shower, came back and pressed a key to clear screen saver and....frozen. In the end I powered it off.
Upon switch on I got the option to press F2 and go to the boot screen. I did this and it was teling me there was no HDD. The machine was "whirring it's heart out" at this time. Eventually it went to a black screen and repeatedly told me
No Operating System.

I left the PC overnight and all was ok the next morning.
I tried to use the FS 'tool' to burn the revoery DVD that it advises but, whenever I put the DVD+RW into the drive it was popped out again within 20 seconds and no option was displayed for me to introduce disc 2. So I got hacked off at that point.

Thie morning I was, again, listening to BBC radio and reading emails (yahoo web based) when I got a blue screen which said something like
"Windows is closing down your PC for a security reason to protect windows" Blah blah blah.

I restarted it and it was OK.
Back to the BBC and reading the news papers online.
I left the PC and went to watch the superbike race on television.
When I returned the screen, once again, was black with the
No Operating System
message. I got totally fed up and turned it off and fired up this ole Compaq.

The machine I have, as I say, is 2 weeks old with Vista HP on it.
I would have much preferred XP pro (as I have on this machine) but, as you can probably tell from my descriptions, I am a PC user and have no great knowledge of the workings.
So, any suggestions or, as is my current idea, should I just send it back and get money back as the machine is, obviously, not fit for purpose?

Other than the above...it's a really nice machine ;-)
Thanks for taking the time to look over my saga!

Yes, if possible, send it back. Probably it is a hardware problem, so it has to get repaired and you'd have to send it in anyway...

(You can try the "hardware reset" (-> FAQ), but I don't think it'll solve the problem.)

This sounds like a defective HDD or controller.
If I'm right, you will not be able to fix it on your own.

Get your money back!

Many thanks for your thoughts. I have been in touch with the supplier this morning and they agreed it was Kaput and will take it back under the 28 day returns policy.
The questions I now ask myself are...
"Do I go for this PC again"? (Was I just very unlucky with my Pi 2515?)
"Do I go for a different F-S Model"? (I have used LifeBooks at work for the past 3 years and found them very good!)

I really do not know. This was my very first experience of buying brand new. My first Toshiba Sattelite was second hand as is this Compaq I am using now. I went for the Pi 2515 as F-S was a name I knew and found reliable(!), it came with 2G RAM (very useful for some of the work tools I need for GSM-3G handset testing), had a 15.4 inch screen and was delivered at 400 GB Pounds.

Thanks again you two for confirming the thought(s) I had in my head.
Cheers for now

I guess you bought the Pi 2515 for a good reason.
If this reason hasn't changed, you should go for the same model again.

Of course the lifebooks have a better quality but I think you just had bad luck.

I have a 2515 and i think you had bad luck. But... If you can, change to Windows XP. I almost threw mine out the window on quite a few occasions when it was running Vista (what a piece of !@#$). Reformatted and installed XP (there's info on the net about how to do this) and it suddenly became a pleasure to use.
