Stylistic LT-P600 and linux

Postby iie » Thu Jun 26, 2008 8:01 am

Hi
I know that this forum is not about stuff like this ( stylistic ) but maybe somebody know which linux could be installed, and how to do this on this bastard:

I've got USB port only, and I dunno what to do? Maybe some pendrive installation?

This is quite tricky.
Normally I recommend Slax for most special applications.
But here we have three special parameters: old hardware (600MHz CPU), special hardware (touchscreen) and a pendrive sytem (are you sure you want to do it this way?)

Slax is a nice pendrive system and might work fluently with the old hardware. But I doubt whether it will recognise the touchscreen. Maybe there is some driver available in the slackware repositories.
The current Ubuntu will most likely detect the touchscreen but I don't think that it will work fluently (maybe Xubuntu is better). Making it work from a pendrive isn't difficult but requires some work.
Ubuntu 6.06 will work faster than 8.04 but I don't know if it detects the touchscreen. Anyway, I think Xfld 0.3 (based on Ubuntu 6.10) would be the better choice.
Kanotix is known to have a good hardware detection but I think it will not run fast enough.

sorry that's becouse of my english "skills", by writing "pendrive installation" I meant that I can use only pendrive to install the new OS, not portable version.

Here is a how-to making an ubuntu Live CD run from a USB drive:
http://edoceo.com/liber/ubuntu-live-usb
With slight changes this should work for every other CD. No matter if it is a Live CD or an install-only CD/DVD.

I would recommend to try Xfld 0.3 since it is the fastest usable Linux-Distribution that I know (DSL is by far faster but too limited). At least it is on my very old desktop PC which has similar specs like your Stylistic.
Most likely it will not recognise the touchscreen. Therefore I would temporarilly change the sources of the repository (/etc/apt/sources.list) to match Ubuntu 8.04 and try to install the touchpad driver.
I will test this procedure next week if you like but I can't tell you for sure if it works since I have no touchscreen.

I also read something about making Debian 2.0 work on the Stylistic LT-P600 but it seemed to be hard and I can't remember the source.
Maybe Debian 3.1 could be an alternative.
