HELP! system32/config/system BUT i cant REPAIR :(

Postby L7320 fuji » Tue Jul 22, 2008 11:33 pm

Hey, i have a Fuji L7320

It has come up with this message saying "windows/system32/config/system is corrupt" and that it has to be repaired.

But, My DVD drive doesnt work :( So i cant boot off the recovery CD to repair it.

I have tried copying the contents of the CD onto a USB and then repairing off that but it didnt work and just said "Operating system not found"

I heard there is a way of connecting your laptop HD to your main computer using a EDI cable or something and then transferring the files off the CD needed.....But what files do i need on the HDD to make it work again?

Hope somebody can help me!

You need an adapter like this:
http://www.sataadapter.com/SATA-IDE-ATA-66-ATA-100-ATA-133-COMBO-ADAPTER/sata-ide-adapter-usb-hard-drive-sata-drive.html
With this you can atach a CD/DVD-drive to a USB-port of your notebook or your notebook-HDD to your desktop-PC and try to recover your system directory.

If you don't have the adapter and cannot get it, download Slax (200MB), copy the boot and slax directories to your USB-stick, open a console, go to boot on the stick, run bootinst.bat and follow the instrucctions.
Then copy the needed directory to the stick, reboot from the stick and copy the directory to its destination.

Hey,

So with the Slax, will i not need to remove the hardrive from the laptop or need any kinda of sata cable?

Just put it onto the usb and then plug that into the laptop?

Im guessing you run the Slax operating system. But i dont know which files to get to repair the system...

With Slax you don't have to remove the HDD from your notebook.
Slax is a Linux-Live-CD that can also be run from a USB-Stick. Just make sure to copy the two directories and execute the script I mentioned.

Since you could write this thread I assume that you have another computer besides your notebook. If it uses the same OS copy the files you need to an extra directory on the USB-stick.
If you then boot your notebook from the USB-stick Slax will come up and you can copy the files you put on the stick to the hard drive. *

Since the files in the system directory might be specific to the system I cannot grant that everything will work afterwards. You should make a backup of the files that you will replace.

* Linux calls drives like sdx# where x is a letter starting from a indicating the HDD/USB-stick and # is a number starting from 1 indicating the partition on the drive.
So most likely you will have to copy the files from /mnt/sdb1/[your_directory] to /mnt/sda1/windows/system32/config/system.
To do this you can use the konqueror which is the equivalent of the Windows Explorer.

Hey , id just like to say major thanks.

Ive put the contents of the recovery CD onto my USB mp3 so i have all files needed just dont know which ones to copy across?

Just now im not sure of what files are needed to repair the corrupted....

System32/config/system.

Any help so i can just copy it over

I don't know if it works but maybe it is enough to copy your system directory to another place (e.g. system_blah), remove the system directory if everything has been copied correctly and rename system_blah to system again.

Otherwise you have to identify the corrupted files (don't ask me how) and replace them.

In your first post you said that you get this message:

Most likely the file system entry is damaged. If you create a new entry by copying the directory the problem might be solved.
So copy and rename the directory windows/system32/config/system.

You will not find the folder on the CD since the contents are compressed and obscured. Your only chance is to get it from another system if you can't restore the files on your notebook.

If the drive fits physically it will be detected immediately.

Right.... UPDATE!!

Im typing this on my laptop as i speak!

I ordered a new DVD drive from here

http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.a ... turer_id=0

Was fairly simple to change over and it detected straight away and i was able to recover my laptop in minutes :)

Id like to say a massive thanks to you Hikaru, the Slax is an AMAZING program, seriously i was really impressed with it. It helped my back up my files and show that my HD wasnt dead. THankyou for all the help you have given me, i was really depressed without my laptop lol.

So yeah best option is to bite the bullet and by a DVD drive if yours doesnt work, you never know when you could really need it!
