How much RAM can the AMILO Pi2540 take ?

Postby Otori » Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:04 pm

I don't seem to find the answer anywhere.

The specs are (if it matters)

Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 1.60Ghz
2GB RAM currently
ATi Mobility Radeon 2400HD 256MB
Windows Vista Home Premium

Thanks.

Now my question is, what kind of RAM is it ?

I belive it's DDR2 RAM, 533MHz, but I'm not sure.

Yes, SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-4200 (533MHz) will work.
But PC2-5300 (667MHz) will work too, is slightly faster if not mixed with slower modules and often cheaper.

Ok, I would rather pick a faster one.

Thanks a lot, hikaru.

The specs are ok if I assume that the missing 2 in PC2-5300 is just a typo.
But I don't know the brand and since RAM is always a tricky topic I would prefer MDT, Kingston or Samsung.

I opened my laptop and found only one socket for RAM. Then it can't take up to 4 GB ?

All Amilo notebooks have two RAM sockets.
Some models have the second one underneath the keyboard. I don't know if this applies to the Pi 2540.

The second RAM socket must be underneath the keyboard. I can only find one socket when I open the laptap. Then I can only upgrade it to 3GB since the second socket is hidden right? Well, I don't got a 64-bit OS anyway, so it's ok.

Or is it possible to get 4GB without sending the laptop in?

If you remove the keyboard you can install 4GB on your own.
But you will not benefit from it with a 32bit OS since it will only use about 3.2GB.

For which task do you need 4GB of RAM?

Well, I can get a 64-bit OS for free. So I'm just thinking if I can't get 4GB I'll just keep the 32-bit. Removing the keyboard is too much stress.

Never mind I think I'll upgrade to 3GB. My problem now is, my CPU is beginning to be a little weak for the games I want to play, the graphics card hasn't failed yet. It's an Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 1.60GHz. Is it possible to upgrade it to T2370 or T2390?

I'm running a lot of programs at the same time, 2GB is usually enough. But, when I open Photoshop which demands a lot of RAM I can notice some slowness, but a normal person wouldn't run that many programs :P

If you want to upgrade your CPU you should go fo a core 2 duo.
According to the datasheet T7250 (2GHz) and T8100 (2.1GHz) are supported. Both will easily outperform the T2390.

Are you kidding? Isn't the Core 2 Duo T8100 45nm? Will it fit in my laptop?
I didn't think the Intel Pentium Dual Core could be replaced by a Core 2 Duo?

If so, where can I get this done?

Yes it is 45nm. But why shouldn't it fit? The 45nm refer to the internal conductors but not to the pins. You wouldn't be able to see them if they were that small.
