Wasted my graphics card

Postby kmreid » Thu Aug 14, 2008 9:54 am

Hi,

I have an Amilo m1437g. When I was trying to put my heatsink back on I used the wrong screw, and now I have a nice hole in my MXM card. As you might expect, the laptop didn't take too kindly to this kind of treatment. When I switched it on, the screen stayed black, and flickered slightly. I plugged the HDD into a surrogate desktop and, after running some diagnostics, discovered that the Master Boot Record was damaged. After running FIXBOOT, FIXMBR and repairing Windows through Windows recovery console, I can boot the HDD into Windows using my desktop.

However, when I put the HDD back into the laptop, I just get the black screen. If I start the laptop with the graphics card without the card plugged in, I get a white screen - I don't even see the POST screen. I thought that once it got to windows, it would default to software graphics drivers/256 colours, etc?

Will I need to buy a new MXM card to do anything?

Thanks,
kmreid

Your notebook doesn't have an onboard graphics chip. This is why you only see a white screen without the graphics card.

To make it short:
Yes, you will need another graphics card.
And make sure to use the right screw to fix the heat pipe.
