Amilo Pi1505 - Boot from USB HDD

Postby srob030869 » Tue Sep 16, 2008 7:20 am

Is this possible on the Pi1505?

In the Bios are options for boot order USB-FDD, USB-CD, USB-KEY other USB device, but when I restart the laptop it will boot from USB-Key, DVD and then defaults to internal HDD, It spins the external HDD, and the access LED flashes briefly, but does not boot from it.

I just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and can offer any help.

Which OS would you like to boot? Windows can't boot from USB. Current unixoid systems (Linux, BSD, Solaris) should work. At least they do for me and we have the same chipset.

I am trying to install OSX, the installer runs OK and OSX installs to the HDD but the laptop does not boot from it.

I have booted from the USB-HDD on a desktop but got kernel panics as the hardware was different, but it did boot.

I'm not that familiar with OSX so I can't help you here.
Have you tried to boot another OS from the external disk? Sometimes it helps to boot an OS on an external disk via a boot loader that is on the internal disk.

btw: Installing OSX on non-Apple-hardware is not allowed by the EULA.

I have tried to boot from the usb hdd with linux (ubuntu) but this also failed.

Do I need to use GRUB to point to the external drive, or should it boot from it automatically as it is set before the internal HDD in the boot order.

If I press F12 I am only offered choices of Internal DVD and Internal HDD, so does this confirm booting from external HDD is not possible?

It seems like your notebook isn't able to boot from an external HDD. If you store Grub on the internal HDD and point to the external drive from here it should work.

Hi,
I've a similar problem, with the same notebook.
I try to boot from a flash pen with a complete linux installation, but at boot time BIOS doesn't recognize the pen as a bootable device and boot from internal hd.
Obviously I put the right boot order and the pen linux installation works on a HP desktop machine.
If I try to edit grub parameter at boot time (grub installed on the internal hd) it seems that only fd0, fd1, fd2, etc. and hd0 (the internal hard drive) are available as boot devices. I tried telling grub that the boot device is fd0, and it load the kernel and initrd but after the boot stops with these errors:

Red Hat nash version 6.0.52 starting
mount: error mounting /dev/root/ on /sysroot as ext3: No such file or directory
setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
Mount failed for selinuxfs on /selinux: No such file or directory
switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory

The grub entry is:
title Fedora penna (2.6.27.5-41.fc9.i686)
root (fd0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.5-41.fc9.i686 ro root=LABEL=inpenna rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.5-41.fc9.i686.img

Thank you for your help

Is Fedora on the USB pen a live-system or did you install fedora as a hard system to the stick?
The latter will not work since the hardware of your computers differs.

Hi hikaru, thak you form prompt reply.

The installation is a regular installation, not a live-system, but I think that the problem isn't here, in fact the pen works on different pc (Desktop and notebook).
I think that the problem is that at boot time BIOS doesn't recognize that there is a second hard drive (same result even if I attach a real hard drive to USB).

Can you see the stick in the bios if it is plugged in?

The BIOS MultiBoot menu show as the first boot device the pen drive, but even if I select it, the boot proceed loading the grub installed in the internal drive, so I try to change the grub parameters to force loading the OS in the pen, but for grub there's no other hard drives (only hd0). Instead there's the fd0 device (where the BIOS place the pen, not only the pen, also a real usb hd if I attach it in the place of the pen). If I boot the pc from OS installed on the internal hd I can see the pen as usual as /dev/sdb. I think that if there's no way to tell the BIOS that he must map the external USB pen as an hard drive all attempts will fails.

Hi All,
I have just had the same problem on my Amilo Pi 1505, with Fedora 10.
I can boot a live Fedora USB stick.
I have installed Fedora 10 on a Maxtor Basics external USB HDD.
I have set the first boot device to the USB key and it shows "Maxtor Basics ..." (whatever) in the BIOS, so it *does* see the device.
But it simply ignores it as a boot device and either boots the DVD if present (next in the list) or the internal Vista HDD.
When I do boot from the DVD and select recovery mode, it mounts the external drive correctly and I can see everything.
BTW: I have a Dell desktop and it booted straight into Fedora from the external drive, as expected. Yes, it went well because, as it had never booted properly on the notebook, the hardware hadn't been configured, so now it's configured for the desktop - but that's all expected.
I really get the feeling that if I put Grub on the internal drive and point it to the USB drive, it'll work fine, but it would be so much better if it could be completely unintrusive...
Any ideas?
Thanks,
jhdodd
