Amilo Li1818 freezing problem

Postby vladoj » Thu Sep 18, 2008 2:16 pm

Hi
I have Amilo Li1818, dual core, 2gb ram, 160gb hdd. All was good, but eventually i noticed that sometimes the PC freezes for a minute or two.
You can move with the mouse thou, but if you click anything, while it is frozen, it says (not responding). In the mean time the HDD led is constantly on.
After the minute, it continues like nothing happened, only the hdd makes some clicking noise once. Because of that, I thought that it is faulty hdd, so the guys in FS changed the hdd for new one. But the same day, it happened again with the new hdd. I have Vista home basic, that came with the amilo, it's installed one moth ago, so I don't suspect that the OS is the problem. I have all updates installed, including SP1.
Most freezes are while I'm on the internet, especially on you tube.
Could some1 help me? Is this software or hardware problem? i have warranty one more month.
thanks

Hardware:
It is very unlikely but the new HDD may be defective too. Please check the S.M.A.R.T-values (e.g. with Everest).
Another reason might be the RAM. Please check it for some hours with memtest86+ (preferably let it run one night).
Maybe it is the graphics card that causes the freezes. Do you see the same freeze in a graphics benchmark (I'm not up to date here, so I can't recommend one)?

Software:
I guess like everybody you have your favorite applications and installed them on the new system right after you got it. Maybe one of them causes the problem. Please try another operating system (e.g a Linux-Live-CD) and do the same things that you did when the freezes appeared (Youtube...).
If you say that it mostly happens on the internet another reason might be a problem with your internet connection. Can you try to reproduce the freezes in a friend's house who has another internet provider?
What about your system security? Can you exclude some viruses, trojans and so on (a new system doesn't mean that it is clean)?

Thanks for the reply, Hikaru.

I tested the HDD with WD diagnostic tools, came out clean.
tested the memory with memtest86+ (but only couple of hours last week), maybe I will test it again overnight.

I will try with linux, I have ubuntu at home, and will post the result.
If that goes good, I will try a clean instalation of vista again, but without limewire and that kind of stuff.
Thanks again
