Problems with hard drives, CD/DVD-devices, firmware updates, USB stick, card reader,...

Hi
The DVD drive in the above model laptop does not show up in the BIOS or as a drive in Windows XP
I can obtain a replacement drive but am unsure of the procedure to remove the casing surrounding the drive. I can easily remove one plastic panel but this only gives access to the HDD RAM ETC but not the drive.
Do experts here think the drive is faulty or is another explanation possible? As it is not showing in BIOS I suspect that it is faulty.
Any help in the procedure of replacing the drive would be appreciated.

Problem now sorted. Dirty electrical contacts.
