Did you install XP with SP3 or did you install XP with SP2 and then upgraded to SP3?

For SP2 the MS hotfix kb888111 was necessary to make the sound work. This should have been fixed with SP3 but sometimes there are still errors. If you have XP with SP2, reinstall it, then install the chipset driver, then kb888111, then the sound driver and upgrade to SP3 as a last step.
