AMILO M1451G - CPU temperature & frequency

Postby mm2007 » Mon Sep 29, 2008 12:17 pm

I have an AMILO M1451G at 2GHz. The temperature of my CPU when the system is working on 100% goes to 98 degrees celsius and the system sutdown immediately (the problem is the cpu fun or the cpu or the mainboard (this is the answer from the official service in greece)).

How I can set the CPU to run in a frequency < 2GHz ?

I run the "Notebook Hardware Control (NHC)" on vista and I can set the CPU speed but after vista is loaded. If the system is not very cold then many times it reaches 98 degrees before the loading of vista.

How Can I change the Bios settings in order to set the prossesor in a smaller frequency at the beggining ?

Thanks in advanced

There is no way to increase the fan speed since your bios doesn't have any dialog for those settings.
Maybe another software than NHC will do better if you want to speed down the CPU.

In general we have three tips to reduce the temperatures:
1. Clean the fan and the grill from dust
2. Get a cooler pad. We can't clearly recommend one model since the performance highly depends on the design of your notebook. Make sure that it fits good. Especially the fans should be in good positions to support the cooling of your notebook.
3. Renew the heat conductive paste of CPU and GPU. Normally we recommend this as a last step since it voids the warranty. But in your case I think this is the most promising option.

Thanks. I will try to clean the heatsink and replace the heat conductive paste.

I just open the laptop and i see that between CPU and heatsink exists a blue thin material. What is this ? After all I can use the same material or I should buy a new one ? I should cover both sides of this material with the heat conductive paste ?

This blue material is a thermal pad. You should not use it again but replace it with a good heat conductive paste.

I don't know the detailed construction of your notebook. Please tell me if your graphics chip is connected to the heat pipe too (is your heat pipe connected to a second chip or do you have two heatpipes?)!

The heatsink has 2 parts (one for CPU and one for the ATI graphics chip). The thermal pad covers both parts (and 2 more chips. maybe bios. i dont know)

I remove the thermal pad and i put on each chip the Arctic Silver 5.

Most likely you will need some spacer to bridge the height-difference between CPU and GPU. Using a 0.5-0.6mm copper-sheet has proven to be the best solution.

You can find detailed information about how to apply the paste on the AS5-site.

I haven't use a 0.5-0.6mm copper-sheet (i dont know where I can find it). I put only Arctic Silver 5.

Now the CPU temp is on idle 56 degrees celsius and on 100% load 72 degrees celsius (mutch better :) ).

But there is one more problem. After a long time on 100% CPU the system shutdown like before (with the CPU on 72 degrees celsius).

Maybe some other subsystem is over heating (GPU, ...).

Thanks for the help.

Yes I think it is the GPU that overheats, because there is no good contact to the heat pipe. This is why you should use a copper-sheet. You can find them all over the internet for only some euros. The best thing would be if you can find one that fits without cutting it because there is a risk that it gets deformed if you try to cut it on your own.

Can you measure the GPU-temperature?

How can I check the temperature of the GPU ?

The graphic chip is the ATI mobility radeon X300. I have the default buld-in Vista driver.

I try to download the driver from ATI site but the site send me to the fujitsu-siemens for all notebooks. fujitsu-siemens from the other hand has drivers only for XP.

You need to modify the desktop driver to make it work for your notebook. Basically I now how it works but unfortunately I'm not familiar with current hardware and drivers.

However, in the german forum there is a how-to that looks promising:
https://www.amilo-forum.de/topic,20122,-Wie-modifiziere-ich-den-Catalyst-Treiber-fuer-mein-Notebook.html#132590

I will try to translate the essential steps:
1. Get the desktop driver from here. Gnomlord recommends to get the version without the Catalyst Control Center due to performance reasons but I recommend you to chose the version with the CCC because you will be able to measure the GPU-temperature with it.
2. Get the modding tool from here.
(Gnomlord recommends to get a registry cleaner to get rid of any old ATI-stuff, but since you don't seem to have some on your system you can skip this.)
3. Unpack the modding tool.
4. Unpack the desktop driver. The dialog looks like this.
5. The installation process will start automatically. Abort it by clicking "abort" in the dialog that looks close to this.
6. Start the modding tool and check "Disable User Account Control(UAC)". Maybe Windows and the tool will require a restart. If this is the case, restart both and continue (reactivate UAC after the whole installation is done).
7. Click "Browse" in the modding tool and chose the directory where you unpacked the graphics driver (in this example it is the directory in the screenshot at step 4.).
8. Click "Modify" and wait until you get this message: "Driver Modification Finished"
9. In the explorer go to the directory of the driver (step 4.) and run "setup.exe". This should install the driver. After this is done, reboot.

Thanks for the translation.

I have install the drivers and the Catalyst Control Center, but there is not temperature indicator in the mobile edition (see attachment).

If I put a new thermal pad only in the GPU or in all chips except the CPU ? (The previous thermal pad was installed also on some small chips around the GPU and the CPU).

I cannot find a copper-sheet in greece and the amazon is refusing to ship the copper-sheet out of US.

Maybe you can get a copper sheet from a local clockmaker or another craftsman if you ask him.
Basically you should also be able to find bigger peaces in a DIY store. Maybe they have some cuttings.

If you aren't able to find some copper sheets you can also use another thermal pad. It's better than nothing. But the heat conductivity of copper is nearly a hundred times higher than the one of a good thermal pad and still eighty times higher than the one of AS5. Therefore heat conductive paste should only be used sparse to have a good connection but not to fill bigger gaps.

I don't know what kind of chips have been covered by the previous pads but I think it was for some reason.
You should reconnect them to the heat pipe.

I don't know why you can't any temperature values. Maybe there isn't a sensor for the GPU.

I put thermal pad (3M) in all chips except CPU (I have not remove the AS5). The previous thermal pad was 2mm but the new one is 0,5mm and it fits better in the heatsink.

Now after 5 hours in 100% CPU (prime95) and with active the aero in vista, all seems to be ok. The cpu temp is 72 on 100% CPU and 61 on idle.

Thank you very match for your help

Better try undervolting with RMClock. Saved my A6120 CPU from meltdowm. PS-Heat depends on load X speed. At zero load, doubling the speed doubles nothing. At 100% load, doubling the speed doubles the heat (watts). Good luck.
