Problems with hard drives, CD/DVD-devices, firmware updates, USB stick, card reader,...

I have a Fujitsu siemens AMILO Pro V 2030 laptop. I have never used any USB devices before and today I bought a new USB flash drive. For some reason, when I plug it into the laptop, it doesn’t work. I’ve tried all 4 USB ports without any luck. The drive works fine with my desktop computer. Do you know what is wrong with my laptop?
Many Thanks in Anticipation.

1. Have you ever reinstalled your operating system?
2. Who is the manufacturer of your USB-stick (the exact name of the stick would be nice too)?
3. Do other USB devices work (maybe you know someone with a USB mouse or printer)?
4. Is USB enabled in your bios?
5. Have you tried another OS (maybe some Linux-Live-CD)?
