Li 1818 Keyboard removal

Postby jtddee » Wed Oct 29, 2008 3:06 pm

Hi all, first post and hopefully a successful one :o) . . . . Seems there's a lot knowlegeable dudes hanging around here . . . .
I've had a look around for the same topic but there seems to be slight differences fitting keyboards on different models . . .
Can anyone tell me where I can find a step by step (idiot's guide) to replacing the keyboard on my Amilo Li1818 ?? I spilt some beer on it and certain keys have given up the ghost so thought I'd better replace it . . . . I managed to source a keyboard (ebay - eventually) but can't seem to find a decent guidefor fitting.
I also need to replace the dvd burner on it :o( but but not sure which one to buy . . Are they pretty standard or do I have to get a particular one ?? And if so from where ???
Sorry about all the questions in a oner guys but hopeing someone can steer me in the right direction . . . .

ps: I'm not one for drinking anywhere near a computer usually but a bottle of beer tilted on the top left hand corner !!

Thanks in advance for any help :o)

In the german forum is a thread that describes how to remove the keyboard:
https://www.amilo-forum.de/topic,16732,-Beim-LP-Amilo-Li-1818-Tastatur-ausbauen.html

You will have to remove the central screw on the underside of the notebook.
Then have a look at the border of the keyboard: You will find 5 clamps, three on the top and one on each side. Carefully bend them towards the keyboard. It is said that you have to bend them all together and that they are very damageable. So be careful, maybe you should ask someone to help you.
If you have done this you should be able to lift the upper edge of the keyboard. Look for the bus cable, disconnect the plug and take the keyboard off the case.

Concerning your DVD-drive:
Look for so called "slim line" drives and make sure to chose one with a P-ATA interface. Don't throw your old drive away too early! I don't know how it is constructed but maybe you will have to reuse its blind and attach it to the new one. You will see this if you compare both drives.
Maybe you will have to remove a screw from the case of the notebook to replace the drive, but I don't know which one.

Thanks for your time Hikaru. I'll give it a go later tonight or tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
I'll do a bit more searching for the DVD drive and bear in mind what you say regarding replacement . .

Thanks again

Managed to replace the keyboard thanks to your help hikaru . . . much appreciated . . . Not too difficult at all . . . easy when you know how I suppose!!
I'll have a look at the dvd writer next and try that. Should be ok as long as I get a compatable one . .
