Upgrade RAM of a Pi 1536

Postby closeto300 » Sun Nov 30, 2008 12:09 am

Some system infos about my laptop:

Fujitsu Siemens Pi 1536

the whole Hardware is the original one, so I didn't change anything

Now I want to upgrade my RAM and need some infos from you:

+ what kind of RAM do i need
+ how many slots do i have
+ do i have to pay attention allocation of the RAM bars ?
+ what is the maximum of RAM I can build in my laptop ?
+ what else do i have to pay attention to ?

I need the RAM Upgrade because I want to run Mac OSX Leopard in a Virtual Machine, because I need the IPhone SDK to develope Apps but I don't want to buy a Mac.

You need SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-4200 or PC2-5300
You have two slots.
No.
Up to 3GB should work without problems.
Take care to prevent ESD.

For Mac OS maybe this is helpful, but I'm not sure:

Hi,

I'm about a RAM upgrade too, and there is a question in which I ask your help:

The Pi1536 manual states, that 1Gb is the biggest 533 MHz module that the Pi1536 accepts in a slot.
I called the support line, and they confirmed this, or at least they told me, this model was
not officially tested with DDR2 modules bigger than 1Gb.

Now I read in this topic, that 3Gb can be fine, but in this case one of the modules exceed the official size.

My question : does anybody use a Pi1536 Amilo with RAM modules bigger than 1Gb ?

I'm considering a 2Gb + 512Mb RAM config (the 512 would be one of the original modules),
but don't want to buy the 2Gb until I make sure it works.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

For my Pi1536, I successfully upgraded to 4Gb ram (2x2) and it works only with Alienware Bios (can be found with google). RAM modules should be identical for a dual channel performance.
Fujitsu bios gives 2 Gb max (black screen at startup with Ram module bigger than 1Gb).
Because of limitation of the chipset, only 3.25gb is usable by OSs (Windows 32 & 64, Ubuntu 32 & 64).

I changed also my x1400 video card for a newer one HD4570 without problem, good performance but a little hotter. A good laptop cooler is recommended for long time working.

HDD and CPU were also upgraded to a seagate 7200 rpm and to C2D T7200, temperature around 40°C & 60°C idle and 50°C & 75°C full load.

Best regards.

Thanks for the tips, phamchau79!
I'm planning on upgrading my Amilo pi 1536 too. It's been three years now, and it's running hot and unstable.

The most important step is probably cleaning the inside of the laptop.
Then I was planning on putting in a NVidia 8600GT, with the help of this site http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Fujitsu.html
Now I now that it's possible to put 2GB extra RAM in it too, probably the most important upgrade is the cpu (because I always felt that the cpu was the bottleneck of this laptop).
If you take a better cpu from the same series, so Core2Duo xxxx, will it always work?

I have never done this stuff before, but the price of the CPU, GPU + RAM will probably be a lot lower than a new reasonable laptop. I'll take the risk.
