Amilo Pro V2010 - Hard drive upgrade help

Postby dno32 » Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:09 pm

Hi, I have an Amilo Pro V2010 with a 20GB Toshiba drive - TOSHIBA MK2023GAS 20.0GB Hard Drive UDMA100 -

I would like to upgrade the drive but I am not sure which drives are compatible with the V2010. Has anyone upgraded a V2010 drive?

I have found 4 Seagate drives - details below - As you can see from the price I might as well go for the 120GB or 160GB drives but I am not sure if they will work. Also the Data Transfer Rates seems a little low 44MB/s shouldn't they be higher?

I would appreciate any input/opinions?

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think your notebook will not accept HDDs over 128GB. Besides this every 2,5"-HDD with P-ATA interface should work.

Thanks for the reply

I bought the "Seagate Momentus 5400.3 120GB" and it worked first time no messing about,

I used Disk Copy from http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/ (free version) to duplicate the drive using an external USB caddy and a 3.5inch to 2.5inch hard drive cable adapter. To resize the partition I used "Norton Partition Magic"

If anyone else is thinking of upgrading here is what I did.

1)Open the USB caddy and attach the new 2.5inch drive to the ribbon cable using the cable adapter (its easier if you use a long ribbon cable).
2)Plug the hard disk power cable into the adapter and sit the drive somewhere safe (not next to your cup of tea).
3)Attach the USB cable and switch on the power
4)Check that the drive spins up, the Seagate is so quite and hardly vibrates at all. I thought I had a faulty drive at first then I noticed the LED flashing away to show it was alive and well.
5)Boot from the Disk Copy CD and Start Disk Copy
6)Select the "Disk Copy" option and select your source and destination drives. Both the internal and USB drive should show up on the list. PLEASE get source and destination the correct way round or you will wipe your data.
Easy thing to remember is "source = SMALL drive" "destination = BIG drive" you will be surprised how many people get it wrong.
7)Once the copy has finished simply install the new drive into the laptop by opening the drive cover in the front middle of the V2010 (there are two screws to take out) and remove the drive. I used a small flat screwdriver to GENTLY ease it out then simply slid the new drive in and power up.
8 )Now run "Norton Partition Magic" (or what ever partition software you prefer) and select the reallocate space option and apply the change to the drive.

In all it took around 45 mins from start to finish, 30 mins for the copy 5 mins to allocate the space to the partition and 10 mins messing about with the caddy.

Hope that's helpful to some folk
