Boot on external Hard Drive

Postby DjAngo23 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:56 pm

I installed a version of windows, and one of Ubuntu on 2 external Hard drives, (and changed the GRUB for Ubuntu to the external Hard Disk) but nothing works.

I explain myself. I Just wanna know if the Amilo Pi 2530 can boot on external hard disk ? You can change, and set the external drive as first in the boot, but nothing change :S

Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem on a Pi 3540.

I boot another laptop through the external (USB) hard disk and it works. So I know for sure that the hard disk is bootable.

I disable the internal hard disk from the boot order in the BIOS of my Pi 3540 - I do NOT want to boot from the internal HD.

I try to boot my Pi 3540 from the external hard disk, which I know to be bootable, and it says "Operating system not found".

If I enable booting from the internal hard disk, and use the F12 boot menu to select the external (USB) hard drive, it just boots from the internal one.

Am I doing something wrong? How can I boot my laptop from an external hard drive?

I didn't managed to fix this problem, so erase Windows totaly from the Amilo, and installed Ubuntu. And using wine and Virtual Box for my Windows Applications ;)

I had already erased Windows totally, I just wanted the other Linux installation as a second choice. I ended up modifying the GRUB of the internal HDD to boot from (hd1). FYI, the BIOS update didn't work either.

Hi.
I have the same problem. You say that BIOS update didn't work. Which BIOS version have you tried?. Have you officially confirmed from Fujitsu that the external USB HDD boot doesn't work?.

Thanks in advance.

You could also try depending of what you want to do . You can call someone else to see if they can boot from their computer and do the preperation for you to install new OS if is that what you need if not , could you say what error appear when you try to update bios ? also if you have any problems with your hard you should online backup your data before playing with the hard-disk i recommend a free one like Dmailer http://www.dmailer.com/dmailer-backup.html .
