pa1510 very slow USB 2 i.e. 1.1?

Postby donone » Sun Feb 01, 2009 3:36 pm

Running XP Pro sp3 or sp2 plugging in a WD-Book 500Gb USB 2 drive to any port results in very slow transfers.
It takes 10mins per gigabyte typically. On a similarly set up desktop system the drive runs at 1min 40secs per gigabyte.
I can find no reference in the Bios to usb.
The system has two XP partitions and they both react the same, even immediately Windows finishes installing.
The system says it has NEC enhanced usb. The drivers are the same on both systems. So far I can only think it is hardware in that all ports are probably one chip and it is running at 1.1 speed.
I do not get any messages.

Anything that tells me it is not hardware would be very greatfully received.

You can try a Linux-Live-CD to verify the USB behavior. If it's that slow too, you can be sure that it's a hardware issue. Otherwise you know it's some Windows-bug.

1 GB / 10 minutes = 1.7 MB / second, that's faster than USB 1.1, so this isn't the problem. But of course it should be a lot more.
(Like hikaru I recommend to test the transfer rate with a Linux live cd.)

Right! I was too lazy to compute this. :-)

Thank you both for input. I have no knowledge of either Linux or the type of disk. A search rewarded me with Knoppix 6 plus something else.
Two attempts at burning the image gave errors on verification.
The second did boot, with two penguins thenknoppix 6 found at /dev/hda.
The a line in German (I did get the English) which looks like it might mean it couldn't mount and started debugging shell.
Then sh: can't access tty; job control turned off.... / #

I haven't a clue what I am doing but I thought that maybe the bad parts might be in something I wouldn't use.

I think this is out, is there another way before I burn disks, when the image might be faulty.

Thanks

The normal way to check an iso-file is to verify its md5-checksum. This is a number in hexadecimal format of 32bits length and can normally be found close to the download link of the iso. Then you compute the m5sum of the iso (not sure if Windows has one out of the box) and compare it to the number on the website. If they aren't identical, something went wrong.

The current Knoppix is still in beta stadium so maybe some things don't work perfectly at the moment. Maybe you want to try another distribution. In this case I would recommend the USB-version of Slax. It has only 200MB and can easily be copied to a USB-stick (FAT32) by extracting the archive to a stick and running bootinst.bat in the boot-directory from the command line.

Thanks for continued help.
I just tried puppy Linux, all sorts of problems. When this is over I think I'll stick to my long term decision long ago, forget Linux, to iffy, unless you have lots of time. I don't think commities ever work

I'll give your suggestion a go.

[Edit] Thanks for the intro to MD5, I just got hold of a summer and found that the download was perfect. Can anything else be wrong with this system? :)

Doomed to failure, maybe it is due to the USB problem. I have set bios to boot from usb key but no chance. The boot sector was written OK it said but it did say wrong parameter just before that.
There must be some other way. :x
[EDIT] Tried another key, booted OK but said could not find kernal image: linux
Boot:

Are you still able to assist please?
I finally got Knoppix 6 to boot (nothing else).
It appears like dos with a few menus but don't know what do do to test USB 2.
[edit] Managed to get gui going but when copying files, the destination says read only and I have found permissions and set them to write but to no avail.
