amilo li1718 ram upgrade

Postby si2252 » Thu Feb 05, 2009 10:49 pm

i know this has been asked a few times, but i cannot find an answer to my problem.

amilo li1718
intel(R) core(TM) duo CPU T2350 @ 1.8GHz 1.87GHz
RAM 1gb
32 bit operating system

i have recently upgraded my RAM by a further 2gb, to make a total of 3gb. when installed my laptop only sees 2gb not 3gb.

i have tried removing the battery and holding the power button down for 15secs.
i have checked my bios version which is v1.9. this is the most recent one.

bearing in mind i am not very technically minded when it comes to computas can someone shine a bit of light on my problem. :?

thanks

Did you already try to switch the two modules?

Is the 2 gb module alone recognized with 2 gb?

i read that without upgrading processor or certain other components that the maximum level of ram to 'hot swap' is one GB per slot. whether or not this is true, i dont know. hope this helps some how. my Amilo Li 1718 has 1gb in each slot, and i dont think it wants to go any higher than that.

Hi,

I have got the same amilo as described above: amilo li1718
intel(R) core(TM) duo CPU T2350 @ 1.8GHz 1.87GHz
RAM 1gb
32 bit operating system

Having recently upraded the RAM of my girlfriends ASUS without any problems, I decided to do the same for my amilo. I wanted to go from the 1 GB installed to 2 GB, so I ordered a 1 GB memory module from an ebay offer especially for the li1718. I found some users online that had already done this, so I went on with it. And so, quite sure of myself , I didn't check the modules installed, only today while installing the new module realizing, that my li1718 obviously came equipped with two 512 MB modules when I bought it some years back, so both slots were in use. I could have hit myself then. ;-) Anyway, I took out one of the 512 MB modules (signed DIMM 2, the other has written DIMM 1 on it) and put in my new 1 GB module. And it actually works: Windows Vista shows 1.5 GB now and the system speed index for RAM went up from 3.9 to 4.2, so windows indeed seems to use the new module.

My questions:
1. Is there anything I am missing or can I just go on with 1.5 GB for the time being? It's an improvement of 50%, so better than going back to two modules of 512 MB? Correct? Or is there any reason why I shouldn't use it like this?
2. Should I go the extra mile and upgrade to 2 GB now with another 1 GB module? Or is the improvement from 1.5 GB to 2 GB not worth the effort?

Any help is greatly appreciated, I guess my questions are quite general, so also answers of users that don't have this notebook are welcome!

Thanks in advance,
Martin

The only disadvantage should be that dual channel can't be used. The CPU and the internal graphics chip both use the RAM, so it may slow down a bit in special cases (CPU and graphics chip both transferring data). I don't think you can feel the difference, so I wouln't concern myself about this.

Depends on the programs you use - if you didn't use 1 GB, then 1.5 GB aren't worth the money, either ;-) But because Windows Vista is the default operating system, the step from 1 to 1.5 GB should be good.
I'd try it with the installed 1.5 GB and monitor the RAM usage, especially how much RAM your applications require, and check if the system has to use the swap file. 2 GB are probably only worth the money if you start several applications which each require some 100 MB RAM...

(Of course you can also say "upgrade now because DDR2 RAM will get more expensive in the future" - it probably depends on how long you want to use the laptop.)

Thanks for the reply!

The system is running since yesterday, no problems so far. :)
Well, I am a heavy multiple-tab user on firefox and quite often have some other apps running too. So I did what you adviced and checked the memory usage via some firefox-statusbar-addon: Normally I seem have more than 600 MB still free, but in just one hour I already managed to go under 400 MB free, so the extra RAM certainly helps. I will look at the bar for the next days, to see if I really go near exhausting all the 1.5 GB. I hope that doesn't happen too often, as I am really reluctant to buy another 1 GB module, since that would mean I stay with actually two 512 MB modules not in use...
