Postby dj_mafiozo » Fri Feb 06, 2009 2:54 pm

Hi everyone.
I've a as great problem as Word Trade Center ( ).
I gotta Amilo Pi2540 about 4 m. Bough as new one. When I had it about 2 month DVD+RW drive got out of order. It's not possible for me to give it to service, 'couse I need it all the time. I bought LG 20x DVD+RW to normal desktop computer and puted it into USB 2.0-IDE BOX.
And here the fun begins.
I can't boot any CD or DVD from it. Checked in BIOS. No option for Boot from USB-CD.

Know anyone solution??

Did you try other USB boot options?
An alternative way might be to create a bootable USB stick with the contents of the CD.
The most promising way I think would be to replace the defective internal drive.

I tried boot from it as 'USB-Key' but it make's nothing.
I've prepared such SD-Card when I was installing MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows for Workgrups 3.11... ;)
But I'd like that it'd able to boot from such device as USB-DVD, for excample in order to install Linux (tried make setup floppy and copy it as Boot-image onto SD-Card, but it gave me nothing. Linux booted but stopped in next moment and what I'd not make, it ain't gonna work.)
And how many knows Linux on Microsoft VirtualPC 2oo7 isn't good idea... ;) And I'd be needin' multiboot Vista and Linux. I'm programer and must compile sources in both systems: Windows and Linux (and sometimes other like BeOS, MacOS X Leopard (have instaled on PC - MacOS X Leopard iDeneb - and know it's questionaly legal, but... - have also oryginal MacOS X Leopard, but my MackBook is out of order...)

Sorry, I can't help you with your original problem, but installing Linux is possible without a CD/DVD-drive.
Did you try UNetbootin?:
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

For virtual machines there are other alternatives than VirtualPC. One is VirtualBox:
http://www.virtualbox.org/
It's free and most Linux distributions work fine with it.

Unfortunately it still has problems to run BSDs so MacOS might not work since it is a BSD derivative.
BSDs work fine in VMWare:
http://www.vmware.com/
VMWare is proprietary software but there is also the VMWare player which isn't free but at least free of charge. It can only run ready-made images but maybe there is one of MacOS that fits your needs.
