Amilo D1845 heats up prettey BAD!

Postby geh » Thu Mar 12, 2009 2:56 pm

Um..hello...
I have a Amilo d1845, with P4@2.8Ghz with 512 ram.
I have a big problem..it really over heats, in the left side, where the HDD is...i dont really think its from the HDD. its new...and it has one disk plate(it's a samsung HM16HJ). I put on the laptop 2 cm big legs...so it would ventilate right...but it still over heats. after 30 mins of working, my hand is on fire...its really strange. I'm a little bit concerned. I still want to keep this laptop a bit more, becouse i can't change it at the moment.

Can you guys give me some tips..on how to cool the laptop...ore make it not overheat anymore??

Thanks in advance:P
WIth a mere 512 RAM and a P4@ 2.80 Ghz he SUCCEDED in running the all new Windows 7 Ultimate x86 build 7068:)

Well it seems that you are unlucky , having one of the worse laptop ever designed.
I took my D 1845 from my bro, only way to adress the heat a bit is clean the fans-heatsinks cause they spin really fast and gather dust really easy.
Unscrew the big cover on the back, then inscrew the heatsink (for CPU its the big one) the unscrew the heasink fan an clean all the mess you will find there.Aply some thermal paste on the CPU and then screw everything back. Its the onlything you can do to lower the temp some degrees

Concerning the coolerpads:
They can(!) decrease the temperature quite well. I have one that cools my CPU down for about 15°C and the HDD for 10°C. The problem with these coolerpads is that you have to find (or build) one with the right design. First of all this means that the fans should match with the ventilation slots of your notebook. Or at least one of them should.
If you chose just a random one you might hardly recognise a drop by 3°C.

Concerning the thermal paste:
This is a bit tricky if you've never done it before. User v2030 wrote a very good how-to to exchange the CPU in his notebook:

The design of your notebook differs but I think this is still usefull. Just skip the steps dealing with the exchange of the CPU itself.

I used a thermaltake cooling station for my D1845. Prolongs up-time when compiling stuff or gaming. Its metal so where the fan's don't quite align it does act slightly like a heatsink, and has two powerful fans which run off USB. Makes it even more combersome, though, and was not really cheap. I think it was called a tai-chi? I have found though that these cooling stations only have a tangible effect when used from boot time. It is not really sufficient to only use it when your table has caught fire as only the March winds in England as cool enough to have some effect then...

Windows 7 (beta) I tried seems to make a difference to the thermal management
