Upgrading HDD for Amilo Pi1505 (SATA --> SATA2)

Postby TheRawGod » Sat Apr 04, 2009 8:43 pm

Hi guys,

I'm currently planning to upgrade the HDD on my laptop and am confused a bit. To my knowledge my Amilo Pi1505 was shipped with a SATA drive, while on the market currently the choice of SATA2 drives is much wider, plus the capacities of the latter are also bigger in average, so I'm looking at 500Gb SATA2 drive instead of my current 120Gb SATA one.

My question is if there are any chances that newly bought SATA2 drive won't work with my laptop?

I have read some info and people say that generally SATA2 drives are back-compatible with SATA ones, but I'm not sure if it'll go smooth with my Amilo Pi. I think it not only may relate to the drive itself, but to motherboard / bios or whatever...

Don't wanna lose money buying incompatible hardware :?

I'll appreciate any help.
Thanks.

That's true. Only the speed of the interface varies.
If you're planning to insert a Hitachi-HDD make sure that it has a height of 9.5mm. Besides this limitation you can insert any 2.5"-SATA-HDD that is currently available.

Today I have successfully replaced my original 120GB WD Scorpio SATA HDD with new 500GB WD Scorpio Blue SATA2 one.
Previously I've cloned my original one to the new one, using the new via an USB enclosure.

Everything worked like a charm with no problems at all.

Thanks again for the help.
