Well, first of all, I don't have much clues either, but you can be quiet sure that Linux will at least run in some way on any laptop nowadays ;-)
However, there are basically 2 remaining common issues: The wifi and the webcam. I wouldn't bother about the graphics, the Intel 4500 Chip should be supported well in all recent distros. The wireless driver situation is quiet good by now, still, I couldn't figure out which chip the laptop used by some quick googeling, but drivers for most chips are within kernel. The webcam, well support has increased as well. Yes, that's very vague.
However, I could find a forum entry (translation from greek) where someone states
Everything fine
Successfully installed:
Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64 Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64
and Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64
(64bit is only necessary with >= 4GiB of Ram)
I wouldn't be too concerned about buying Linux compatible laptops today, there won't be any major issues, and if there are they usually can be solved someway.
Still, it would be helpful if someone who actually possesses this or a similar laptop could give a statement, so these are just my 2ct.

I'm optimistic too. I don't know much about WLAN but most chipsets are supported by linux today. And for the other ones there is ndiswrapper if this is an option for you.
The webcam is most likely a bison or a logitech product. These are supported quite well. Depending on your distribution you might have to compile a driver on your own.

What most likely will not work is the Sony Memory Stick support of the card reader. SD and SDHC should work fine. I have no clue about other standards.

Ok, thanx! :D
What are your general thoughts about the Li 3710? I´m going to use it as a internet laptop, no games. Should do just fine or what do you think?

I have a Amilo L7310GW. I am currently running Linux - Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) on it. The only problem I have is that USB devices are not automatically detected. I have to do a bit of fiddling each time and then the USB devices are slow, real slow. Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to download 360 photos from my kodak camera! I have put up posts on a number of Linux forums so far and no one has come up with a solution as yet. Also the battery life is a bit shitty! I have not had longer than 45 minutes from new - currently only 15minutes battery life. If I were you I would stay away from this model. Why don't you try and run Linux off a live cd before you buy and make sure everything works. Try it in the shop. I have not tried PCMCIA cards as well. Hope this helps.

This would be my suggestion too. I would download the latest Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty & maybe Mepis as well to take. You can also enter the model number into the Ubuntu forums and google to see what issues others may be having & also using google to get a list machine specs of what devices, chipset it uses and check that in the forums etc.
Or when you have the live cd running in it you could open a terminal and enter the commands sudo lshw which will give you a comprehensive list of everything in the machine or lspci for a shorter list of what chips are in it. note the main items like bus chipset, video, sound, network interfaces etc and again search them on forums & search engines to see what they reveal.

I think it has best features then the other one.Like it has,
1)160, 250, 320 or 500 GB hard disk capacity
2) Up to 4 GB memory*

Hi,
I have a Li3710 and have successfully loaded Mepis Linux onto it. The only issue that I'm having is getting the sound card to work. Is anyone else having the same problem. The sound card in this machine is a hda_intel. lsmod shows that the driver is loaded. I've also reload alsa a coupe of to no avail. :(

Cd.

Hi roadrash,

I tried alsa-utils to setup the card but to no avail. I think that the board is not supported. It is an Intel Corporation 828011 ICH9 family the driver that is loaded is snd_hda_intel
I went to http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. ... ndor-Intel and there is no mention of this chip set The newest one that they mention is ICH7.
