Secondary Master "Not Installed" on AmiloPro v2030D

Postby ccaspell » Fri Apr 10, 2009 11:26 am

Unable to start windows XP I decided the best course would be to reinstall it from the CD. Each time I tried it kept restarting windows rather than looking at the CD, and then it failed. I checked the BIOS and made sure that the CD was first on the list to start but still it would not work. Next I swapped the CD for an identical one that I had to see if that made any difference - none at all.

Next I looked at the main screen in the BIOS and it had found the HDD but apparently not the CD/DVD drive as it said "Secondary Master - Not Installed".

Any thoughts on how I can get the BIOS to recognise the CD/DVD drive (it is, I believe the standard one that comes with the v2030D - i.e. Philips TX08-C).

Would appreciate any help as I have been trying to get this machine to work, off and on, for over a month and I am loathed to dump it as in the past it has worked well enough for all I wanted it to do.

Thanks in advance.

This has been a common fault on some Amilos. Seeing as you've tested another drive, it may be that the optical controller has failed. I think the HDD and optical controllers are separate on your machine, as the HDD on my Li 1818 is SATA, but the optical is the standard laptop optical bus, which is IDE. Especially as you say it has worked on and off.

Have you had any issues with the HDD being detected, or sudden "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" STOP errors?

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. I think you have misunderstood me; when I said that I have tried off and on to get it working, I mean that I have not spent 100% of my time trying to fix this problem. As far as I am aware, the CD was working fine but that being said I do not use the CD very often so it could have stopped working some months ago and since I never use it I would not have noticed. The problem has not been intermittent.

I have not had any issues in the HDD being detected or stop errors. The machine suddenly would not restart which is why I wanted to reinstall Windows to get the machine working again.

Would a failure of the Optical Controller prevent starting the machine from, say, as USB attached device? Indeed, is it possible to put an external USB drive as the first in the list for starting the machine?

Thanks again for your assistance.

A USB optical drive or flash drive would work fine, bring up your boot menu, usually F12, and select it. There's no need to go into the BIOS and change boot priority.

Install windows using external USB HDD on AmiloPro v2030D

Postby ccaspell » Tue Jun 01, 2010 12:42 pm

Having put this machine away for the winter (without having had much success before) I decided to try and get it going one last time before sending it to the skip.

In short the machine will not boot from the CD and I need to reinstall windows. I am not too bothered about getting the CD to work though I have replaced it there may be other problems so I am happy for it not to work.

I copied Windows XP (from a full copy of Windows XP not OEM) onto an external USB hard disk then started up the AmiloPro v2030D and hit F12. The two boot options were the external HDD and the internal drive (once again proving I think that the CD was not found). I selected the external drive and there was one flash of the drive light and the cursor flashes in the top left corner. Nothing more.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
