Which notebook do you have?
Can you see firewire (btw it's IEEE 1394) in the output of lspci?
Are the kernel modules you need for firewire loaded?
Does your camera require firewire 800?

Maybe this is helpful:

Hi,

I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa1510.

My camera was bought in year 2001, sorry, but I don't know what is Firewire 800.

I'll check the kernel modules loades this afternoon.

But the problem repeats in Ubuntu or WXP.

Thank you.

Firewire 800 (or IEEE 1394b) is a newer and faster substandard. Your notebook has Firewire 400 (IEEE 1394a). Therefore I asked if your camera needs 1394b. If it's from 2001 1394a is ok.

If you have problems in Windows and Linux it might be a hardware issue. Currently I have no Windows running so I can't really help you there.
Maybe the Firewire controller is deactivated in the BIOS. Did you check this?

If the BIOS provides an option to disable firewire you should see an entry like Firewire [disabled], ieee 1394 [off] or something similar.

Hi hikaru,

I've done "lscpi" and the result is:
05:04.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): O2 Micro, Inc. Firewire (IEEE 1394) (rev 02)

and I've updated the BIOS (ver. 1.07c) I've checked my Bios and I don't find the firewire option.

I've done the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire recomendations.

Thank you in advanced.

Do you see any output in dmesg if you plug in the camera?

How is the camera powered when it is connected to your computer? In contrast to the 6-pin firewire of a desktop computer the 4-pin firewire of your amilo can't power it. You'll need an external power pack or the camera has to run on its own battery. Not all cameras support this.

Hi hikaru,

When I plug the firewire in the camera, the camera touch screen shows "DV IN" message, and the camera is powered with external power.

Thank you in advanced.

Hi hikaru

This afternoon I'll do "dmesg > output_file".

I think it's correct.

Thank you

It's important to see what happens when you plug in the camera. So the best think would be to call dmesg before the camera is connected, plug it in and call dmesg again.
Then you should see some additional lines. This is the important part.

So your camera isn't detected at all.
How do you connect it to your notebook? Are there any hints in the manual if the camera should already be running when you connect it? Does it have to be in a specific mode?

Can you test other firewire devices with your notebook?

Hi,

I connect my camera in VCR mode. I've connected my camera in my brother's computer with WXP and the videocamera runnings ok.

Friday, I'll connect my brother's camera (is the same model than mine) on my laptop and I'll send news.

It seems that my laptop firewire port doesn't work.

Thank you.
