Upgrade of Amilo Li 2727 - From a very green newbie

Postby badaids » Mon Jun 01, 2009 7:19 pm

Dear all,

I've searched the forum all over but I cant find tha answer I need, perhaps in part because I know very little about computers and partly because I don't think the thread I need exists.

I have an Amilo Li 2727 which I want to upgrade: both the RAM and the CPU (perhaps). However, i got my Amilo second hand for free with no manuals or information at all. I would very much like to know.

- What type of memory upgrade cards I need to go in the slot.
- How far I can upgrade from 1Gb.
- What CPU I can upgrade fairly cheaply with - value for money balanced against performance.

I use my computer only for dabbling in Cubase for music production, arranging, recording etc... I really need a boost for this, and don't want to buy a whole new machine.

Thank you very much in advance for any advice or knowledge you can give me.

Regards

B

RAM:
You need modules of the type SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-4200 or PC2-5300. The latter is faster and cheaper but you won't recognise the speed difference. You can reasonably upgrade to 3GB.
Depending on your current configuration you either need one 2GB module to occupy the free slot or you need a 1GB and a 2GB module to replace the current two 512MB modules. You can check your current configuration by either opening the service door or with a tool like Everest.
Changing RAM is pretty simple. The only thing you have to take care of is to prevent electrostatical discharge (ESD). Basically this means to ground yourself and to not touch any electrical contacts.

CPU:
Depending on which CPU you have now and how much you want to improve it you can insert any Socket M CPU. The most powerfull is the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 with 2x 2.33GHz while I think the reasonable limit is the Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 with 2x 2.0 GHz.
Changing a CPU is pretty tricky and a lot of things have to be considered.

User v2030 wrote an excellent how-to about changing a CPU:

You can use this as a template with respect to your different hardware. This basically means a different way to apply the thermal paste on your CPU.
