Does the AMILO PI 3540-024 works fine on linux ?

Postby niko380 » Sun Jun 28, 2009 8:54 am

Hello,
I'm about to buy an amilo PI 3540, and i would like to know if they are any issues on Linux.

My questions are :
- does the wifi works ?
I've seen this message [http://www.amilo-forum.com/topic,2150,-amilo-pi-3540-wlan-driver.html?hilit=3540#p7357], but does it works out of the box on the lastest distro ?

- are there any problems with the ACPI : suspend to disk suspend to ram ...

About the silence :
- does the silent button works ?
- Is the fan's processor working when you're only using mozilla with about 10 tabs opened ?
- is the fan's processor silent ?

About the sound card :
- does-it works great ?

Are there any other hardware problems ?

Thanks a lot for your responses

Wifi works well, acpi works fine (however there is an error/warning message when booting up ubuntu about Pcaps (it probably doesnt support lan card power management, yet), silent button works and it has nothing to do with fan it just locks multiplier on your cpu, so you are actually running like on 1.6ghz cpu, sound card runs fine, all of this runs out of the box.

but there are 2 problems that you should be aware off
1 - integrated volume control (Fn + F3,F4,F5) lets say doesn't work, they cause ubuntu to stuck, but i hope they fix it in new version
2 - this laptop has "broken" memory controller, so you can use 32bit os, or use x64 with mem=4096m flag, but this shrink available ram to 3Gb(just like in 32bit)

so thats about it ;)

do you mean that the Core 2 Duo T5800 is a 64bit processor (I thought it was a 32 bits) ?

it probably doesnt support lan card power management

the lan connexion is not supported ?

Sorry to insist with my previous questions, but it is very important to me :

Is the fan on when you're only surfing - with mozilla tabs full of flash ( :x ) - while listening music -with Amarok (by example) ?

If yes, is this fan noisy when you're in a quiet room ?

Thank you, I'm more an more seduced by this laptop, an if it is not too noisy, I'll probably buy it this evening !

all of this new c2d cpus support x64, problem is somewhere in bios, lan works just fine, only warning during boot, it probably cause that OS cant disable it when you are not using it (not a big problem i think)

About fan, when GPU is running under 59C u cant even hear that laptop is turned on, when it reaches 60C fan spins in, and cools down hole notebook to about 50C and turns fan off (ofc fan is running, but he has like 10%of full rpm, so you cant her him) and about the flash etc, as you know there is no HW acceleration, so if you are playng HD flash videos, fan spins in, because u are using more then 50% of your cpu and laptop is hotter, but at the moment nvidia and adobe are working on GPU accelerated flash, so this will go away after new version of flash player.

My opinion is that this laptop is good for linux if you gonna run 32bit version

Thank you cTn, you've answered to all my questions.
I agree with you, this laptop seems to be very usefull on linux 32b.

Unfortunately, I've seen it with a good price (450 euros) at a store near my home, but the last one has been sold this afternoon

So I will certainly look for an other laptop with the same features

If i can suggest, try looking for laptop with geforce 9400 or something faster (this 9300 and i think also 8400 gforce cards have some problems with powermizer, olso i figured everything out, i just wanted to let u know, that i f you find same laptop and there will be 9300 and 9400 versions, the 9400 is worth it
