Need Help - AMILO Li 1818.??

Postby dealrocker » Sat Aug 01, 2009 9:47 am

I have a AMILO Li 1818, It works pretty fine. But, from last few days I have been facing a problem, my notebook just turn off after some time, though has happened rare. Just guessing its a over heating issue.
does anyone have a similar problem and whats the easiest way to fix it?

Please help.

I've had this problem with my Li1718. though it turned out it was because my CPU fan was taking in an awful lot of dust. i completely turned off the laptop and removed the battery and got out henry my hoover. i was amazed at how much dust was stuck in there. overall i reduced the CPU temperature by 40 degrees (used speedfan to calculate this). now it runs cool and quiet. however check your laptop isnt on high performance or something and your blocking the airflow to the fan.

does everything turn off completely when it crashes, or could it be something like hardrive failure/dodgy battery/connections?

I don't recommend using a hoover. It can run the fan too fast, and damage it. It also generates static. I like to do a proper service every 6 months. These instructions are for the Li 1818. I've serviced many, plus own one.

1. Take the service cover off by removing its screws.

2. Remove the tape between the heatsink and fan.

3. Remove the screws holding the heatsink on to the CPU and chipset. Release the CPU screws in the numbered order by a few turns each until they come loose. There's a single screw holding the heatsink to the chipset.

4. Remove the heatsink by lifting it up from the CPU, tilt it up and out, pulling it towards the fan, that clearance where the tape was is there for that reason. Make sure the CPU is not solidified to the heatsink, otherwise it'll come out of its socket. I like to run it to warm the thermal grease up before i do the service.

5. Clean the dust from the heatsink, now you can use a hoover, you're away from any components. Remove the fan, too. There's two screws, one is under the VGA cable tape. Note the routing of wiring, it needs to go back how it was. The fan comes apart for cleaning. Use a toothbrush, not a hoover.

6. Renew the thermal grease. Use baby wipes to clean off excess paste from the CPU core and heatsink. Use a tiny drop of new grease, it only needs to cover the core, which is tiny. Don't forget that the heatsink will spread the grease when re-seated. Too much grease and the CPU will sweat. Not enough and thermal transfer will be compromised. Don't do what I've seen some "technicians" do. They put paste on the CPU and heatsink, there's no need, it's too much.

7. Reassemble by reversing my instructions! I recommend doing this every 6-12 months, it will prolong the life of your CPU and system.
